A big tricked-out name tag

You know what’s magical? When an actor can do something in a TV commercial – some small little thing – that ends up ringing and resonating throughout the popular culture.

Like “Flo,” the Progressive Insurance sales clerk with the “big tricked-out name tag.”

Love. That. Commercial.

If you Google the phrase “big tricked-out name tag,” you will see that it has captured the public’s fancy.

All because of the way the actress says it. A perfect little piece of comic timing is what it is.

I could tell right away she had improv training. Because I’ve been an improv groupie for 25 years, having spent many hours at the Second City in Chicago.

Sure enough, “Flo” is Stephanie Courtney, a member of L.A.’s Groundlings theater troupe.

You know who else used to be a Groundling? Will Ferrell. Phil Hartman. Lisa Kudrow. Jon Lovitz. Kathy Griffin.

So that’s where Stephanie Courtney is coming from.

Embedded below is the Progressive Insurance ad, in case you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about. Below that is 2½ minutes of Stephanie Courtney doing standup comedy... which, to be quite honest, is nothing special. Nothing special at all.

But that’s okay, Steph. They’ll never take away your big tricked-out name tag. That belongs to history!

What could possibly be more cute than...

... a little kid cussing?

Mitch Mitchell (1947-2008)

Drummer John “Mitch” Mitchell, who had been Jimi Hendrix’s closest musical collaborator, died yesterday in Oregon.

As the last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitchell had just traveled the United States with the Experience Hendrix tribute tour... a series of concerts featuring Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

The Times of London obituary for Mitch Mitchell is here.

In Mitch’s honor, I’m streaming “Manic Depression” on my Vox blog. It’s probably the best example of Mitchell’s explosive and intricate drumming. Click here to listen.

Then click here for a 2½-minute interview of Mitchell by music journalist Steven Rosen. It’s available on a 2007 CD called “Jimi Speaks.”

A free Billy Boy Arnold download

Harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold cut his first records in Chicago more than 50 years ago... one of them being “I’m a Man” alongside Bo Diddley.

By the 1970s, European audiences had embraced Mr. Arnold in a big way. But his recording career dried up in the ’80s, and he found work as a bus driver and a parole officer.

Then Arnold signed with Chicago’s Alligator Records in 1993, releasing an album called “Back Where I Belong.” This brought his music career back to life.

A track off that album is available as a FREE MP3. Click here to hear “Young and Evil” on my Vox blog. To download it, click the song title below.

Billy Boy Arnold’s latest album came out earlier this year. “Billy Boy Sings Sonny Boy” is a tribute to the hugely influential Chicago bluesman John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson.

The Condi Rice of France

Did you know that France’s minister of state for foreign affairs and human rights is a black woman? Yep. Rama Yade, just 31 years old, was born in Senegal.

In France, “minister of state” doesn’t mean the same as “secretary of state” in America. Rama Yade is one of three ministers of state who answer to the foreign minister.

But that doesn’t stop folks from calling her the Condoleezza Rice of France... or even “a female Barack Obama on the European continent.”

A French dude has uploaded a video love letter to Rama Yade. I can dig it; she is mighty pretty. And if she had married Barack Obama, you know what? She’d be Rama Obama!

And together they could’ve taken over the world.

Goofing on Sarah (R-rated)

Oh Gov. Palin. How can we miss you if you won’t go away?

Sarah Palin was on “The Today Show” this morning. She was on Greta Van Susteren’s Fox News show the past two nights. And she’ll be on “Larry King Live” tomorrow. The woman’s making moves, y’all.

But does Palin have a future in national politics? I seriously wonder. Because YouTubers are steady making fun of her. (Yeah, still.) And grassroots ridicule is a hard thing to overcome.

So... since the real Sarah Palin keeps calling attention to herself, here are some video spoofs of the smutty kind:

Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘A Night to Remember’

Remember Shalamar?

Repost: Lt. James Reese Europe, U.S. veteran

(This was originally posted on November 12, 2007.)

In honor of Veterans Day, here’s the little-known story of James Reese Europe, a bandleader and composer who had a big impact on early jazz.

Born in Alabama in 1880, Jim Europe created music for black theatrical shows of a kind that flourished on Broadway in the early 1900s. He also organized the first professional guild of black musicians.

He led a 100-piece orchestra that performed a legendary recital – “A Concert of Negro Music” – at Carnegie Hall in 1912.

The next year, Europe was hired as musical director by a white dance team, Vernon and Irene Castle, who would almost single-handedly popularize ballroom dancing in the United States.

“Europe’s Society Orchestra” was likely the first black orchestra to make phonograph records for a major U.S. label (Victor).

Then came World War I.

In 1916, James Reese Europe was persuaded to take over the military band of the 15th New York Infantry, a black National Guard regiment. Under his leadership, the band performed at recruitment drives and attracted many new enlistees. Europe was rewarded with the rank of lieutenant.

The United States entered the war in 1917, and this black regiment was called to active duty, soon to be sent to France and renamed the 369th Infantry.

While overseas, Lt. Europe did more than lead the regimental band. He was assigned to a machine-gun company. According to pop-culture historian Tim Brooks, Jim Europe became “the first black officer to lead troops in combat” during the war.

The 369th Infantry distinguished itself in battle, earning the nickname “Hell Fighters.” That name also attached to Jim Europe’s band.

At war’s end, Lt. Europe and his musicians received a hero’s welcome in New York City.

The band would recreate the sounds and spirit of combat in a 1919 recording, “On Patrol In No Man’s Land.” It was written by Europe, Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, with Sissle singing. Click here to hear it.

This story ends badly. In 1919, in the midst of a triumphant concert tour, Jim Europe was killed by one of his own musicians, a hotheaded drummer who sliced him with a pocket knife.

“People don’t realize yet today what we lost when we lost Jim Europe,” Eubie Blake would recall. “He was the savior of Negro musicians. He was in a class with Booker T. Washington and Martin Luther King. I met all three of them.

“Before Europe, Negro musicians were just like wandering minstrels. Play in a saloon and pass the hat and that’s it. ... Jim Europe changed all that. He made a profession for us out of music. All of that we owe to Jim.”

The definitive biography of James Resse Europe is “A Life in Ragtime” by Reid Badger. It’s brand new in paperback.

Miriam Makeba (1932-2008)

Miriam Makeba – the most widely acclaimed singer from the continent of Africa – died last night in Italy, where she had just performed at a benefit concert. She was 76.

The International Herald Tribune obituary is here.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ms. Makeba gained national attention during the 1950s as a featured vocalist with the Manhattan Brothers.

But the apartheid government revoked Makeba’s passport while the singer was overseas, starring in a stage musical. Makeba spent the next three decades in exile. With Harry Belafonte’s help, she became a star in the United States... and a prominent critic of apartheid.

Nelson Mandela encouraged Ms. Makeba to return to South Africa in 1990. At the time of her death, she was South Africa’s goodwill ambassador to the world.

In honor of Miriam Makeba, I’m streaming two of her recordings from 1970.

Click here to hear her version of Van Morrison’s “Brand New Day” on my Vox blog.

Then click here for a live concert performance of “Malcolm X,” written by Makeba’s only child, her late daughter Bongi Makeba. This was recorded in Conakry, the capital of Guinea.

Below is a clip from the documentary “Come Back, Africa,” filmed in 1959. It shows Makeba singing in South Africa before her exile.

I like “Morning Joe.” And I like Joe Scarborough. Never a dull moment with him in the mix.

Like this morning. He said the word “fuck” on the air.

A mistake like that used to be a career-destroyer. Today, it has made Joe Scarborough a YouTube sensation.

Watch the top clip below, with Scarborough discussing future White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. The reactions are priceless!

Scarborough isn’t the first MSNBC star to drop the F-bomb on live television. Check out the bottom clip from 2007. It’s Chris Matthews via telephone on “Imus in the Morning.”

A free Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials download

One good side effect of the election of Barack Obama is... it shines a spotlight on the city of Chicago. I lived and worked in Chicago between 1983 and 1985. It remains my favorite American city.

Today’s FREE MP3 comes from Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, a hard-rocking Chicago band led by slide guitarist Lil’ Ed Williams.

Williams is connected by blood to the great tradition of Chicago slide blues. Lil’ Ed’s uncle and teacher was Hall-of-Fame bluesman J.B. Hutto.

To hear “Hold That Train” on my Vox blog, click here. This track is from Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials’ new album, “Full Tilt.”

To download it, follow this link to Amazon.com.

And if you wanna get to know Lil’ Ed Williams a little bit deeper, check out this 10-minute promo video:

Something familiar from Katt Williams

Katt Williams has a new DVD dropping on Tuesday: “It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’.”

I enjoy Katt’s comedy. He brings a lot to the stage in terms of vocal stylistics and physical energy. Some human insight too.

But judging by the promotional video embedded below – which uses audio from “Pimpin’ Pimpin’ ” – it doesn’t seem like Katt Williams is breaking any new ground here.

Matter fact, this “Gangsta Tigers” routine is a variation on Chris Rock’s “Siegfried and Roy” bit from a few years ago.

Funny animation, though. WARNING: Foul language and N-words aplenty.

G.E.D.L. Hughley

I’ll make this quick, because I don’t begrudge D.L. Hughley his CNN show. Really, I don’t. And I certainly don’t wanna behave like a crab in a barrel. Not after the week we just had.

But D.L., goodness gracious... read a muhfuggin’ book!

About six minutes into tonight’s program, D.L. began interviewing Dr. Drew Pinsky, the psychiatrist, about healing our nation’s partisan divide.

Pinsky was disturbed, he said, by the “cantankerous and rancorous” tone of the 2008 presidential campaign. Before Pinsky could finish his thought, D.L. interrupted thusly: “I got a G.E.D. ‘Cantankerous and rancorous’... ?”

Pinsky paused, downshifted, and rephrased it: “hostile and angry.”

Mr. Hughley nodded approvingly. “Okay, I got that,” he said.

I reached for the remote. I was through. Outta there. Because D.L. Hughley hosts a show on CNN, and he doesn’t know what the words “cantankerous” and “rancorous” mean.

You think D.L. was joking? Since he’s, like, a comedian and shit?

No. The man has a limited vocabulary. I found that out in late 2006 when I attended a panel discussion hosted by Elvis Mitchell. It included the cast of the NBC drama “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” along with series creator Aaron Sorkin.

The same thing happened. Another actor said a word that D.L. didn’t know, and D.L. announced he didn’t know it. He might have even mentioned his G.E.D. again.

I wish I could remember what the word was... because, as I recall, it was not a sesquipedalian word. It was a word that everyone else on that stage (and probably everyone in the audience) comprehended.

From then on, Bradley Whitford or Steven Weber – one of those smug bastards – made a running joke out of the word. I felt bad for D.L.

Not tonight, though.

UPDATE (11/09/08): Here’s a vidclip of the Drew Pinsky segment:

‘Sambo’s good time is come...’

In honor of President-Elect Barack Obama, I’d like to share a page from America’s racial and political past.

In 1864, after Abraham Lincoln was re-elected in a landslide, someone using the name “L. Seaman” wrote an eight-page tract titled “What Miscegenation Is! and What We Are to Expect Now that Mr. Lincoln is Re-elected.”

It was a snarky vision of a world turned upside down. And it dripped with contempt for colored folks (referred to by slave names such as “Sambo,” “Cuffy” and “Pompey”).

For your reading pleasure, I’ve put an excerpt below.

You can read the whole thing online by following this link to Cornell University’s Samuel J. May Anti-Slavery Collection.
L. SEAMAN: Cuffy’s good time is come – his millennium is at hand. Millions of treasure is expended daily for his benefit. The blood of whitemen is shed in torrents for him.

Mr. Lincoln says the war must be prosecuted until slavery is abolished. Henry Ward Beecher said in his Fifth Avenue Hotel speech... that “When this war ceases, slavery will be gone. It will be out of the way.” He considered that “every drop of blood spilt without accomplishing that certainty squandered.”

Of course Mr. Beecher must believe the war is for the negro, and Mr. Lincoln declares that the war will stop when slavery is eradicated – hence our conclusion that Sambo’s good time is come – that his millennium is at hand – that his star is in the ascendent. White men, just stand back and let the conquering heroes pass. ...

Gradually, for the past four years, public sentiment has been setting in Pompey’s favor, and if it continues thus, at the same ratio, at the end of the next four years dark complexions will be fashionable – white and pale faces will be discarded.

The ladies, instead of applying white chalk to their faces, will use char-coal with profusion; instead of a small delicate foot being the rage, big flat understandings with projecting heels will be all the go; instead of puckering up their lips to make their mouths look small, they will be turning them inside out that they may resemble Dianah’s ruby lips. ...

The front seats in places of amusement will be reserved, invariably, for colored folks. Congress will soon pass a law making the colored man a legal voter, and declaring him eligible to office; he will occupy public positions, from policeman up to President. ...

Pompey will be Mayor, Judge, and Governor. Our Legislators will be of the thick-lipped and wooley-headed fraternity. Colored men... will ride in their carriages with a white man on top as driver, and perhaps have another on behind. Things are changing. They are being reversed. ...

Since the re-election of Mr. Lincoln, the Blood Royal of Africa – the crème de la crème of colored society have been extremely jubilent. Soirees d’Afrique are being had throughout the country. Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and New York, have all been favored with their jubilent demonstrations.

The late emancipation proclamations, the re-election of Mr. Lincoln, together with the recent decision of the people of Maryland to discard Slavery, has given our colored Brudders a good opinion of themselves, and they have become the aristocracy, proper, of the country. ...

There is a sound of revelry every night, and Africa’s sons and daughters (her beauty and her chivalry) trip the fantastic toe; gorgeous lamps shine o’er fair women and brave men; a thousand hearts beat happily; and when music rises with its voluptuous swell, shiny eyes look love to eyes which speak again, and all goes merry as a marriage bell.

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta couldn’t leave well enough alone. Check out this report from today’s Times of London:

“The election of Barack Obama as the first African-American US President could pave the way for the election of the first black Pope, according to a leading black American Catholic.

“Wilton Daniel Gregory, 60, the Archbishop of Atlanta, said that in the past Pope Benedict XVI had himself suggested that the election of a black pontiff would ‘send a splendid signal to the world’ about the universal Church. ...

“Archbishop Gregory said that the next time cardinals gathered to elect a Pope they could ‘in their wisdom’ choose an African pontiff. ‘My own election as head of the US Bishops Conference was an important signal. In 2001 the American bishops elected someone they respected regardless of his race, and the same thing could happen with the election of a Pope.’ ...”

Palin ‘didn’t understand that Africa is a continent’

Now it all comes out. Fox News reporter Carl Cameron just unburdened himself of some behind-the-scenes campaign dish. (It was “off the record” till after Election Day.)

Cameron was told by Team McCain insiders that Gov. Sarah Palin “didn’t understand that Africa [is] a continent” with many nations, not a country unto itself. (Fox News anchor Shep Smith couldn’t believe it!)

Oh yes yes yes! Tell us more, tell us more!

Palin, according to Cameron’s sources, was also “hard to control emotionally.” She would throw temper tantrums after reading negative stuff in the press.

Wow. And some Republicans think Sarah Palin is the Great White Hope for 2012?

The video is below.

UPDATE (11/05/08): Carl Cameron also appeared on “The O’Reilly Factor” tonight, and he fleshed out his earlier report of Sarah Palin’s ignorance about Africa.

Palin had asked campaign staff members “if South Africa wasn’t just part of the country” of Africa, “as opposed to [being] a country in the continent.”

Absolutely amazing.

Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’

Election night open thread

Polls are about to close in the first batch of Eastern states.

This is the comment thread to discuss whatever you wanna discuss throughout the evening.

5:32 p.m. (Pacific Time): Holy shit! Fox News just projected Barack Obama the winner in Pennsylvania!

That is huge, people. For the past week, Karl Rove has been saying it’s impossible for McCain to win this election if he loses Pennsylvania. ...

6:04 p.m.: MSNBC says that Arizona — John McCain’s home state — is too close to call! Wow. ...

6:20 p.m.: Are you ready for this? Fox News just called Ohio for Obama! This race is over. ...

8:01 p.m.: CNN has just projected Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States!

‘Vote Dizzy’

As we count down the hours until the election ends, how about a little music... and some history?

Did you know that jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie ran for president in 1963/’64?

Yeah, it was a joke campaign. But Diz got mileage out of it, including a “campaign song” – a reworking of his classic composition “Salt Peanuts.”

Click here to stream “Vote Dizzy” on my Vox blog. It was recorded live at the Monterey Jazz Festival in ’63, and it features bebop vocals by Jon Hendricks.

According to Wikipedia: “[Gillespie] promised that if he were elected, the White House would be renamed ‘The Blues House,’ Ray Charles would be appointed Librarian of Congress, Miles Davis would become the head of the CIA, and Malcolm X the Attorney General.”

Jon Hendricks told a British newspaper in 2004: “It shone a light on the whole thing. Like, ‘What about a black person running for president?’ It had never happened before.

“At the same time, black people were saying to the Democrats, ‘We don’t have to vote for you.’ It was to give both political parties, all those poseurs and jive-talkers, a kick in the butt.”

A white bassist named Bill Crow, in his 1992 memoir “From Birdland to Broadway,” wrote that he wore a “Dizzy Gillespie for President” button when he performed on the White House lawn in 1964.

“It was prominently displayed on my lapel when Lyndon Johnson and his Attorney General, Robert Kennedy, came through the crowd, shaking hands,” Crow wrote.

“I don’t think Johnson’s eyes came far enough into focus to see my ‘Dizzy Gillespie for President’ button, but I got very stern looks from the pair of Secret Service agents that were covering his back.”

Lyndon Johnson won the election.

Not a happy day for everybody.

Before I went and voted, I had breakfast at a neighborhood spot. As I sat down, two elderly white ladies were talking about the election. I couldn’t tell what they were saying exactly.

But later, when one of these women departed, she said to the other: “Keep your chin up, whatever happens.” And then: “They’re comin’ to get us.” She said it like a sad joke.

Evidently, not everyone is looking forward to the final results.

The break

Part of the reason I was stressing out is... like a pain addict, I’ve been exposing myself to the right-wing propaganda of Fox News.

As late as last night, the whoremonger Dick Morris insisted that polls predicting an Obama blowout can’t be trusted... except when they indicate a late surge toward McCain.

I halfway believed that crap.

The mantra of the Obama-haters has been: “The Investor’s Business Daily/TIPP poll was the most accurate of all polls in 2004.” And two days ago the IBD/TIPP poll showed Obama ahead nationally by only two points. That’s within the margin of error!

Late deciders are breaking towards McCain! The TIPP poll is the most accurate poll, and it says that this thing could go either way!

Okay, fuckers. Now that you ruined my sleep pattern, why don’t we look at today’s numbers? In particular, let’s look at the final IDB/TIPP poll before Election Day.

Tell us, TIPP... is the race even tighter? Like, neck-and-neck? Maybe McCain has moved ahead by a point or two?

Ummm... no.

The final TIPP poll shows Obama leading McCain by eight points.

Two-point lead on Sunday; eight-point lead today. (Need I remind you... the TIPP poll was the most accurate of all polls in 2004.) Looks like the late deciders have broken towards Obama.

And I am breaking towards the liquor store to buy some Veuve Clicquot.

Tonight, while Obama supporters drink champagne, Dick Morris will probably be sucking on a prostitute’s toes.

If only I could sweeten my bubbly with Sean Hannity’s tears.

David Byrne says: ‘Vote.’

I just received a mass email from David Byrne, one of my favorite recording artists. I didn’t realize that Byrne isn’t a U.S. citizen. (He was born in Scotland and spent his early childhood in Canada.)

Here’s what Mr. Byrne had to say:
Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can’t Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election. ... On Election Day, I see my neighbors heading to the nearby elementary school to cast their ballots. The voting booth joint is a great leveler; the whole neighborhood – rich, poor, old, young, decrepit and spunky – they all turn out in one day.

But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can’t – and don’t intend to – finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights.

Global warming? What’s that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks – we’ll stick with a good ’ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and fucking proud of it, as is always the case.

Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain’t over ’til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests. So please, get to your local elementary school, post office, town hall, or whatever, and cast your vote and make this a country we can all be proud of. We can get out of this mess, and life can be better than it is.

One more day!

A young buddy of mine named Hamani got up early on Saturday to vote. I didn’t even know California had early voting. In L.A. County, there’s only one place you can do it: Norwalk.

I don’t even know where Norwalk is.

Anyway, Hamani said it was like a concert out there Saturday morning. “I’ve never seen so many black people up at the crack of dawn in my life,” he joked.

Guess who he ran into, also waiting to vote? Filmmaker Charles Stone III. They chatted, and Stone posed for the picture above. Very cool.

Charles Stone, as you probably know, resurrected his famous “Whassup?” advertising campaign for a pro-Obama viral video. And viral it is, with 3.8 million YouTube views in 10 days.

November is American Indian Heritage Month

Actually, the official name for it is “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.”

I will be celebrating it here throughout November. And not just because I got some Pamunkey in me. (Matter fact, I think the current chief, William Miles, is a distant relative.)

Let’s start with a pop-culture relic from a less enlightened time. It should be familiar to anyone of my generation – a “Go Go Gophers” cartoon.

Dueling poets on Barack Obama

From the left, Glenis Redmond. From the right, “African Queen.”

Two days...

Something surprising and ironic has happened as this presidential race hit the homestretch: Foreign media provided two big embarrassments for the Obama and McCain campaigns.

First, a British newspaper – the Times – revealed that Barack Obama’s aunt from Kenya, Zeituni Onyango, is living in a Boston housing project. According to the Associated Press, she is an illegal immigrant.

Then came news yesterday that Sarah Palin has been pranked by a couple of radio tricksters in Montreal. Audio of a ridiculous phone conversation between Palin and a guy she presumed to be the president of France is now all over the Internet.

If you haven’t heard it yet, it is embedded below.

Time for this chaotic campaign to end already.

A Halloween surprise

So I did my usual thing last night – getting out of the house to avoid trick-or-treaters. There aren’t many kids on my block anyway. But I... well, I just wanna be left the fuck alone.

Figured I’d see a movie. So I went to Glendale’s new upscale mall, the Americana. Checked out “RockNRolla.” (Maybe I’ll blog about that next week. I have a few thoughts.)

Anyway, there were lots of teenagers in Halloween costumes at the mall. Plus a lot of little kids in costumes with their parents. And the little kids were trick-or- treating the stores.

Did you hear me? The little kids... were trick-or- treating... the stores!

Goodness gracious, have you ever heard of such? And the stores were ready for this! They had candy!

Matter fact, Anthropologie had a tall blonde chick dressed up like a princess to pose for photos with the little ones.

Yeah, it was cute, but damn... trick-or-treating at stores? That’s not what it’s supposed to be about.

I walked into Urban Outfitters... approached a woman working there. I said: “I didn’t know kids trick-or-treated stores now.”

“I know, right?” she said, smiling. “I used to walk blocks. We had to work for that candy.”

By the time I arrived, Urban Outfitters had run out of treats. But the kids kept on coming. So the woman was handing out “Free Yr Radio” stickers. And that was just sad.

What the hell is happening to the old ways? Do y’all know about this? How long have parents been taking their kids to business establishments for trick-or-treat?

Ben Affleck on ‘SNL’ tonight

Let me say a few words about Ben Affleck. As a film actor he’s weak. And as a human being he pissed me off like no other celebrity has since I moved to L.A.

A few years ago, when I lived on the Westside, I was at a Starbucks when Ben Affleck strolled in to purchase a beverage.

Cool, I thought. I like seeing celebrities.

Affleck took his drink to an outdoor table and proceeded to read a newspaper.

Then, as I walked to my car, I noticed a parking cop writing a ticket for a black Benz illegally parked in a “red zone.” Ben Affleck noticed this too... and he approached the officer.

From across the street, I could tell what was happening. I wanted to run at them, waving my hands and yelling, “Don’t do it! Do not rip up that ticket!”

But I just stood there. Sure enough, Affleck talked himself out of a parking ticket... a ticket that you or I or Joe the Plumber surely would’ve had to pay.

I thought: “That’s your life, isn’t it, Ben Affleck? Bonin’ Jennifer Lopez and parking in the red zone.”

Now... let me say this: When Ben Affleck hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2004, he rocked it hard. Indeed, it struck me that this was the perfect forum for his talent... sketch comedy. He had voices, he had characters, he had great timing.

I would’ve advised him to take a year off from movies and join the “SNL” cast full-time.

Well, Affleck is hosting again tonight. And John McCain will make a cameo appearance. And word has leaked that “SNL” is planning a “savage” sketch making fun of Keith Olbermann.

I am looking forward.

Studs Terkel (1912-2008)

Author Studs Terkel – an old-school Chicago leftist and a Pulitzer Prize-winning social historian – died yesterday at the age of 96. (The CNN.com obituary is here.)

One measure of Terkel’s liberalism was his interest in African-American culture... a culture which, for much of his life, was nearly invisible to white America.

While a disc jockey in Chicago, Terkel championed the career of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.

And she returned the favor.

Embedded below is a 14-minute excerpt of Studs Terkel’s 2005 interview with Amy Goodman on “Democracy Now!”

This fascinating conversation rambles from Mahalia Jackson to the early days of Chicago television to McCarthyism to George W. Bush. I promise you will enjoy it.

Three days...

... and I can truly visualize either of three outcomes on Tuesday night: a blowout victory for Obama, a squeaky-tight win for Obama, or a stunning upset for McCain.

Because America is on the verge of doing something so profoundly at odds with its history, I cannot put absolute faith in the pollsters. The “intangibles” at play this year are enormous.

Still, you can scroll to the bottom of this homepage throughout the weekend and see the latest poll numbers, as compiled by RealClearPolitics.
