Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘The Groove Line’

I like the thought of songwriters getting rich. Rod Temperton, an Englishman, wrote his first hit records – including this one – when he was in the funk band Heatwave.

Then he fell in tight with Quincy Jones and wrote such tunes as “Stomp!” (for the Brothers Johnson), “Give Me the Night” (for George Benson), “The Dude” and “Razzamatazz” (for Q himself), and “Rock With You,” “Off the Wall” and “Thriller” for Michael Jackson.

No surprise that Mr. Temperton reportedly owns homes in L.A., France, Switzerland and Fiji.

Heh heh. Yeah, he's got one of those headfake names, IW. Early on, I think I assumed black Brit.

Dang! I didn't know he was white and I thought he was in the band. I LOVED Heatwave!! I'll never forget slow dancing to Always and Forever and the idiot guy insisted on singing in my ear - but he was tone deaf. Funny memories.

when he was in the funk band Heatwave.

I vaguely remember the white guy in the band. But I'd heard his name before. Then I watched a documentary on Quincy Jones. That's when I learned how funky Rod Temperton is. :-)

^oh, so he was in heatwave? ok, guess i was really confused :-)

^ I made a quick edit to clarify that fact, IW.
