Look at that face. Janelle Monáe is ridiculously good-looking.
More impressively, she doesn’t skate by on beauty. She has committed herself to an idiosyncratic artistic vision, in the spirit of Nona Hendryx, Betty Davis and Grace Jones.
Monáe’s debut EP, “Metropolis: The Chase Suite,” came out yesterday. I’m streaming “Many Moons” on my Vox blog; click here to listen.
Next Monday, Janelle Monáe performs for free at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. I’ll be there... hoping not to turn into a stalker.
Below is a recent live performance of “Sincerely, Jane.”

Hello there!
Okay, okay, she is a cute lady!
(smiles)
Perhaps, I will concede, she is (as some sistas say) "borderline fine". *LOL*
Lisa
the music is weird. I checked it out on itunes. I have to say, I was not willing ot give up 99 cents for a song.
She is cute though.
I feel bad saying that, because watching the video, I realize that if she had coome over from England, I'd be all over this new sound. Sigh...
I have to say, I was not willing ot give up 99 cents for a song.
Fair enough, Kellybelle. I'll keep an eye out for free downloads... I'm sure somebody'll put one out there.
At this point, anybody who comes at the music business with any kind of different style, I root for.
Perhaps, I will concede, she is (as some sistas say) "borderline fine".
You are gracious and magnanimous, Lisa!
;^D
Unquestionably beautiful...nice voice...but....
That syle is "out there". She needs some good writers and to immediately change her style.
She's at the Viper Room in 4 days...hopefully she won't have to get a restraining order :-)
I agree with anybody ...beautiful girl. I actually disagree with "Lisa" ...borderline? Shit, honey IS fine. LOL.
I just sampled her EP on iTunes. Wow, she's way more left than I thought. Could grow on me though.
^ We've been needing a new Nona Hendryx. Shoot, we've been needing the old one.
She sang on OutKast's Idlewild album, a finger-snapper called "Call the Law." I liked it a lot. And there's nothing wrong with being "weird" or "out there." If you look like everyone else, that means you're easily replaceable.
^ Welcome, grapcran. Thanks for commenting.
^ Project much?
Well, the comment is out of line. It's deleted herewith.
^ No worries.
I love QBGs (quirky black girls)! But folks don't tend to know what to do with them/us, especially when the quota of 1 is already filled
^ QBGs! Yes!
very cute girl and that she's way out left works for me. The weirder the better I say, especially for a black woman. But to me her voice ain't strong enough to carry the music...yet. I'll give her some time.
^ Hey, Fay!
You know what gets me mad? Monae is cool, i like her. You once posted "progressive black women" on your blog right: with Tiombe Lockhart and Georgia Anne.
Shit, I am really an outthere kind a nigga. I am literate and cultured. So when i search for a woman she gotta be progressive. So it makes me a little mad to find out that Tiombe Lockhart got a white boyfriend. Look, i am cool with interacial dating. But, come on, i have to go through bullshit booty shaking women to get to those who have minds and when you do find them you find out they've abondoned brothers.
So i hope that more women like Monae date niggas. Sure go other races if interested but i really think they gotta stick around a bit more.
^ Welcome to my spot, brah. I'm not the one for dating advice... but your comment tickled me.
Monae is another shot of what todays music needs. She cute too.
^ Alas, I couldn't get out of the house tonight like I'd hope to and check her out. I'm already kicking myself.
^Couldn't get to the laundromat again? :P
^ Yeah, something like that. Sometimes I just can't deal with getting up and out.
Seems Prince has taken a liking to her as well.

^ How cool is that?
"The next big thing."
