A free David Byrne and Brian Eno download

My musical tastes weren’t always very broad. During my high-school and college years, I was monomaniacally into Parliament-Funkadelic.

I didn’t get into Talking Heads, for example, until P-Funk keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell joined the band (for its 1980 “Remain in Light” tour).

Little did I know, Talking Heads been funky.

David Byrne has reunited with his old Talking Heads co-producer Brian Eno for a new album called “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.” It’s for sale as a digital download – direct from Byrne and Eno – for $8.99, starting tonight.

The track “Strange Overtones” is available as a FREE MP3. Click here to stream it on my Vox blog. To download it, follow this link to the Pampelmoose music blog.

Below, you can stream the entire album, track by track. (Click “Show Playlist.”) It’s a neat new way to market music, if you ask me.

"Burning Down the House" was our jimmi jam even before I could really appreciate Byrne and Talking Heads. But I always knew this band had something, I just wasn't connecting yet. I just needed to give them time. I had a co-worker who was totally into them and alternative rock. And then I bought the "Little Creatures" cassette (okay, I know I'm dating myself). I've got the CD now, and I love it!

I was lucky enough to catch the "Remain in Light" tour in Berkeley in October of 1980 (with The English Beat opening). To this day, it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen. Byrne hadn't gotten into the choreography and "the big suit" costuming yet, and for the most part just stood there and enjoyed the controlled mayhem that was happening around him. I was in the sixth row, with Adrian Belew's speaker right in front of me, and my ears didn't recover for days.

UBM!!! You have already turned me on to a grip of music. So let me try to repay you by suggesting that you get MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS---in case you don't already have it. Do that ish!

^ Thanks, Bryan. Believe it or not... I never got hold of that album. But I'll fix that.

"No Compassion" by Talking Heads is my personal misanthrope anthem.

Factoid: You know the little chime-ditty that plays when you turn your computer on and off (if you run Microsoft)? That's Brian Eno's.
