Not wanting to ignore the “PI” dimension of APIA Month – Pacific Islanders – I point you to a FREE MP3 from Cyril Pahinui, a Grammy-winning master of kiho’alu (or Hawaiian slack-key guitar music).
Cyril’s father, Gabby Pahinui, was a very influential slack-key guitarist and a leading figure of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance of the 1970s.
To hear Cyril Pahinui’s rendition of “Meleana E” – a song believed to be more than 100 years old – click here. He plays it on a 12-string guitar.
To download “Meleana E,” follow this link to Download.com. The track is from Cyril’s 2007 album “He’eia.”
