Celebrities and their political donations

I’ve stumbled upon an interesting site called Newsmeat. It’s a search engine for political campaign contributions.

Evidently if you contribute more than $200 to a campaign or a PAC... that’s public information.

The first name I searched for was my own. (Sure enough, my business is in the street.)

Then, for fun, I decided to look up a couple of my old bosses. Like David E. Kelly, creator of “Picket Fences” and “Ally McBeal” and other hit TV shows.

Guess what? David E. Kelley contributed $2,300 to Barack Obama on December 6, 2007. That’s the maximum individual donation allowed for a primary campaign.

Good on you, DEK!

Next: David Milch, my used-to-be mentor, the co-creator of “NYPD Blue” and creator of “Deadwood.”

Wow... Milch also gave $2,300 to the Obama campaign on January 11, 2008.

How about some black celebrities? Are they giving to Obama as well?

Jamie Foxx maxed out with a $2,300 donation to Obama last June.

Will Smith maxed out for him last May.

Branford Marsalis maxed out for Obama last March.

Sidney Poitier maxed out for him in September.

Tyra Banks? She, too, gave Barack Obama the full $2,300 last June.

Halle Berry maxed out for him last May.

Jeffrey Wright, one of my favorite actors, hasn’t maxed out... but he gave the Obama campaign $2,050 last September.

So who hasn’t kicked in?

Stevie Wonder. Nothing. (Although Stevie gave $1,000 to the Jesse Jackson campaign in 1984.)

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Also nothing. The only politician Kareem ever gave money to, apparently, was fellow basketball star Bill Bradley ($1,000 in 1999).

Speaking of the NBA, did you know Karl Malone was a Republican? He donated $4,000 to Bush-Cheney in 2003 and another $4,000 to the Republican National Committee in 2004. And in 2006 Malone gave $5,000 to the Commonwealth PAC, a Republican fundraising group.

Newsmeat rocks. Have fun with it. Look up your favorite celebrities.

Here’s one I was curious about: Bill Maher. Can you guess which Democratic candidate he gave $1,000 to last December?

(I’ll post the answer in the comments section.)

Oh, and here’s something else interesting... the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It seems Rev. Wright has contributed nothing to Obama’s presidential campaign... though he did donate $1,000 for his 2003 Senate race.

Karl Malone likes to hunt, so he's probably afraid the Dems would try to take his guns.

I'm guessing Maher gave to Kucinich or Nader. However, I did look up another of your old bosses...Steven Bochco. He gave $2300 to BOTH Obama and Hillary. Nothing like covering your bases, I guess.

^ Maher ain't that far left, apparently. He gave to John Edwards.

Kellybelle: That would probably explain it.

Howard dean, John Kerry, Barack Obama?

You undercover commie, you.

^ You must've looked up the wrong Mills. Dean and Kerry ain't seen none of my money.

Obama's the first candidate I ever contributed to.

It was a pretty open secret that Karl Malone supports the GOP.

Barkley, too.

I wonder where Jordan stands?

My guess is that there are a lot of politically apathetic Black celebrities.

I remember how fucking stupid Andre 3000 looked when Bill Maher asked him some questions about the 04 presidential campaign. And he was the chair of MTV's Rock the Vote campaign to register new and young voters!

Newsmeat is a great site. HuffPo also has it's own version.

Maher has been pretty open about his support for Edwards from the start.

And hasn't Kareem Abdul-Jabbar endorsed Obama? I know Magic Johnson has endorsed Hillary.

Michelle has given something like $350 to her husband's campaign if I'm not mistaken.

kellybelle,

...I bag a deer every year - delicious, but SNAP, ...I'm 100% behind Barack. If I do loose my guns, I'll have to turn to my bow, or my knife, or my ice-pick, or my teeth!

...guess it's in the blood.

Peace

Hugh Hefner did the same thing!

Bette Midler gave the max to Hillary and Obama and Edwards and Bill Richardson! She's just a girl who can't say no.

Kareem has been writing a lot in support of Obama on his blog...is that worth $2300?

And I thought I read somewhere that Barkley had gone Democrat and was supporting Obama. Or was it just the latter?

^jeff, I guess we'll see if and when he runs for governor of Alabama. Most likely, he's just one of the Repubs that's crossing over to vote for Obama.

Maher did exhibit a particular fondness for Edwards pre-writers strike.

Chuck's a Dem. Here's what he said:
I was a Republican until they lost their minds," he said earlier this month at a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada.

"Sir Charles" reinforced that Tuesday while speaking to a convention of public school board members in Destin, Fla.

"What I've said is I'm rich like a Republican. But I'm not one," Barkley said in remarks reported by The Birmingham News.

Wish Colin Powell would do the same publicly.

MJ donated 2100 to Obama last Feb. Guess he couldn't come up with the extra 2hundo.

A-Rod donated to Bush in 03 and to Giuliani this year.

Wow. Alex Spanos, owner of the San Diego Chargers, has donated 6.7 MILLION since 1980 and not one cent went to a democrat.

A shocker: Billie Jean King maxed out for Hillary. :^)
