Wanna watch ‘Hill Street Blues’?

Here’s news: Hulu.com “goes live” tomorrow.

That means, if you’re in the U.S., you’ll have access to its library of streaming TV shows – including such classics as “Lou Grant,” “Barney Miller,” “WKRP in Cincinnati” and “St. Elsewhere.” And weird stuff like “Astro Boy” and “Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot”!

Right now, I’ve embedded a first-season episode of “Hill Street Blues” at the bottom of this page. You can watch the whole thing right here (with a few commercial interruptions).

This episode originally aired in May of 1981. One thing that was so startling about “Hill Street” back then was its frank acknowledgement of racial tension as a fact of life in American cities. We’re talking about 1981, when shows like “Fantasy Island,” “Dynasty” and “The Dukes of Hazard” were big hits.

If you never watched “Hill Street Blues,” here’s your chance to check out the most influential TV series of the last 30 years.

I miss Kiel Martin

^ That reminds me, Rambler... Kiel Martin once played a black guy passing for white... in the blaxploitation movie "Trick Baby." It's out on DVD.

I never did see it, but just ordered it from Amazon.

Just wondering, UBM, do you know if the writers of these shows are getting paid for these?

^ Under the new WGA contract, I assume they will be, S.O.L. Otherwise we struck for nothing! :^o
