A free Charlie Haden download

Jazz heads, listen up. If you move fast, you can download “Hello My Lovely,” a 1992 track by the Charlie Haden Quartet West, featuring the splendid sax man Ernie Watts.

This track – with its smoky aroma of old nightclubs – is from the 2007 CD “The Best of Quartet West.” Haden composed it.

Charlie Haden is a legendary bassist whose jazz career spans half a century. He played on Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking LP “The Shape of Jazz to Come” in 1959. (To hear the stunning “Lonely Woman,” click here.)

Haden had a long association with Ornette, and then with pianist Keith Jarrett. In 1986, Haden formed his Quartet West with Ernie Watts, pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Larance Marable.

Now, to hear “Hello My Lovely” on my Vox blog, click here. If you wish to commence downloading the FREE MP3 (courtesy of KCRW.com), hit this link.

You can also download it via iTunes. Just search for the KCRW podcast called “Today’s Top Tune.”

Either way, this track will only be available for a couple of days. So if you want it, grab it.

Thanks for this, Dave. Charlie Haden is one of my all-time favorite artists. His Quartet West has some beautiful romantic melodies that remind me of film music from the 40s and 50s.

Check his Liberation Music Orchestra, too. They've only put out four cds. All high quality stuff with all-star bands.

I'm pretty sure somebody will send this to you, but I wanted to drop you a line just in case. Sorry to interrupt the thread.

Although I already have this cut, I love Charlie Haden and have seen him many times. An interesting bit of biography...he grew up in West Virginia and as a child, was a member of the Haden Family, a country group that performed at the Grand Ole Opry. That always struck me as so bizarre...from the Opry to Ornette Coleman.

And I agree with DeAngelo..check out his Liberation Music Orchestra stuff...especially the most recent one.

Hmmmm.

You should check out Napster. One of the things I like about it is that it's library of classic jazz is pretty complete.

DeAng and Doug: Thanks for pointing me to the Liberation Music Orchestra. I've not heard any of those projects.

Dave, if you like Quartet West, you'll absolutely LOVE the Liberation Music Orchestra. It's hard to rank them, but if I had to The Ballad of the Fallen would be classified as the most essential one. I think they're all essential though.
