Speaking of Charlie Haden, I must mention his talented daughter Petra Haden, an idiosyncratic pop vocalist and jazz violinist.
Lately she’s been on a one-woman a cappella kick; her 2005 CD “Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out” recreates an entire album by the Who with just her voice.
Similarly, Petra remade the Beach Boys tune “God Only Knows” as a multitracked a cappella recording. To hear it streaming on my Vox blog, click here.
“God Only Knows” is available as a FREE MP3 on Petra Haden’s website. To commence with the downloading, hit this link and watch it happen.
Trippier still, Ms. Haden’s MySpace page contains her one-woman a cappella version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” (Not the whole album; just the song. But you know what? Remaking the whole album that way would be cool as shit!) I suggest you pay her page a visit and stream that one.

That was pretty cool, but the Journey Cover was even cooler until she went to chanting it....bah. Im a bit overdone on Mike...having heard it 2M times as a kid.
Im just done with Michael.
Or as my uncle would say.
If she wants to impress me...have her do Michael AND Paul Mccartney on the girl is mine.
Ill take any remakes without his voice i can get.
Thanks, inkognegro. Welcome to my spot. I hope all's well.
She's so much fun! I'm sending all my friends over to her MS page!
^ Cool, daughter. I'd like to see more singers try that multitrack a cappella concept. I guess Bobby McFerrin started it all. But yeah... someone with a fun spirit can really jam with that concept.
Man, I love your site. Totally addicted to it.
This visit has made me realize GOD ONLY KNOWS is one of my favorite songs, period. Love David Bowie's version (how I heard it first, funny enough), love the original Beach Boys joint and now this.
Petra would also be Jack Black's better half and played with the Decemberists for a bit.
^ Petra would also be Jack Black's better half...
His much better half.
Reginald: Much thanks. Glad you liked.
