A free Garaj Mahal download

Garaj Mahal, a jazzy Bay Area jam band, has a new CD out called “w00t.”

Ever heard of Garaj Mahal? I hadn’t. I’m not into the jam- band scene.

Luckily for me, a 10-minute funk track called “Hotel” is available as a FREE MP3. Click here to hear it on my Vox blog. You can tell right away, these guys ain’t bullshittin’.

To download “Hotel,” click the song title below.

Two live tracks are also free to download at Garaj Mahal’s MySpace page (if you have a MySpace account). To hear one of them – “The Paladin” – click here.

I really like stumbling on new funky bands.

these guys are great. thanks for bringing them to a wider audience. i'm not sure that many jam band fans have heard of them either. They are more jazz/eastern/fusion than jam band. They have a pretty low profile- but all members are technical virtuosos of their instruments. A definite must see if they are ever in your neck of the woods

^ I'll definitely keep an eye out for them, Mordy. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, good for you to bring attention to these guys. The guitarist is Fareed Haque, an absolutely great classical player who crossed over into jazz. Check out the eponymous cut on Javon Jackson's "Good People", to hear more.

Actually, let me widen that recommendation, since having gotten a sense of your music taste, I'm CERTAIN you'd dig the shit out of that album. Its highlight is probably the cover of Santana's "Flor de Canela" featuring John Medeski and Vernon Reid.

^ Thanks, John-Paul. On your recommendation, I just ordered a used CD through Amazon.

I'm not wild about Javon Jackson's latter-day "funk" tracks... but I don't know his earlier stuff.

Thanks.
