‘Only God can save this country’

Linked below is a 23-minute documentary about Haiti produced in November 2008.

Seen in the context of the latest earthquake, it shows a land of perpetual crisis... and a people used to saying to the rest of the world, “Help us.”

I'll definitely watch it. Thanks. Always looking to learn more.

We watched an interesting documentary on Toussaint and the genesis of the Haitian failed state.

UBM,

Thanks for linking to this video. I hadn't heard of it.

I thought this article, Country Without A Net, made some good points.

On the one hand, I feel like it's been such a *short time*(24 years) since the Duvalier regime ended.

On the other hand, I almost feel like this guy in this doc about Afghanistan -- maybe the country should be blown up and everything is started anew. Harsh and unrealistic, I know.

Also, The Agronomist, a documentary by Jonathan Demme is worth seeing.

I wouldn't trust God to do it to be honest...

ANY aid to these people should only come on the condition that they stop being what they are.

UBM: What do you think is the cause of these people's endless helplessness?

^ Not sure, anonymous stranger. But having half your adult population illiterate can't be a good thing.

Blows my mind that none of Haiti's many "leaders," over more than 200 years of independence, made universal education a priority.

Thrasher said...

Blows my mind while folks are still under bricks in Haiti folks like UBM are concerned about universal education!!!!

What drives this fucking mental depravity by slugs like UBM?? the need to indict folks can even take a day off while we try to save lives...

You prick UBM..Kiss my Black highly universally educated dark skinned negro dialect ass..

^ A better-educated populace might've resulted in some better-constructed housing, my friend.

It's never a good time to tell a hard truth.

It's a little frightening to me that so many responders know so little about Western interference in Haiti's sovereignty that they would conclude a lack of education as the primary reason for its (Haiti's) past & present state.

Where were you guys when Aristide was kidnapped in '04? Didn't anyone see the hearings on CSPAN where one of the Bush administration admitted that our government representative THREATENED Aristide if he didn't sign a letter of resignation before he was spirited off to French-controlled Africa? Doesn't anyone know that Haiti was required to REIMBURSE France for the loss of Haitian SLAVE labor, thereby putting Haiti as a country in debt at its inception? Is everyone unaware that the US occupied Haiti, wrote its constitution & dictated who ruled and who didn't in the early 20th century? Does no one remember that the US supported both Duvalier's murderous & thieving regimes?

Is everyone ignorant of the fact that IMF/World Bank reorganization of the country required that its farmers STOP producing food for the country and import it from foreign countries, which in turn destroyed their livelihoods and forced them into the cities... which in turn created overpopulated cities that couldn't enforce natural disaster-proof building codes (read: rebar)? Is everyone unaware that foreign businesses (including Disney) exploit cheap Haitian manual labor?

What's going on at this blog that purports to be pro-black? Or, perhaps I misunderstood this blog's intent.

Here's some information on Haiti that includes historical context:
