A free Slum Village download

Serious hip-hop heads are mourning the death on Saturday of Baatin, a founding member of the Detroit group Slum Village. (The Associated Press story is here.)

I’ve got a FREE MP3 by the original Slum Village crew... including the late, legendary J Dilla.

Click here to hear “It’z Your Thing,” featuring singer J. Isaac and former Death Row rapper Kurupt. To download it, click the title below.

This is off-topic.

I just wanted to thank you for bringing up the Joe Morton reading of Ralph Ellison's 'Invisible Man' audiobook in this blog.

I bought it from B&N and I'm expected to get it next week.

The Joe Morton/Invisible Man connection is pretty intersting to me,,,,,since the role he played in "Brother From Another Planet" was in FACT based on one of the characters from 'Invisible Man'. I can't get over this coincidence.

P.S. Since you're a writer, I hope you make a "book recommendation" post every once in awhile in your blog,,,,I'm def intrested to know what you're skimming through.

And once again, thank you much TOO much.

^ You're welcome, Harlepolis. Alas, I'm not much of a book reader.

^ I remember you saying that, lol.

A rap group I used to rep at RUSH played a song by Slum Village for me years ago--I thought it was one of the best songs I'd ever heard, and I begged Lyor Cohen to sign them

He actually did, but then they didn't do anything else notable for the longest, haha. But they have always had that underground street cred that kept them afloat...like Dead Prez, long after most groups have faded away. So sad; they had something to say besides how fly their rides were.

I'm from Detroit. We are very proud of Slum Village, and Baatin will be missed....as will Jay Dee.

IW: I didn't know you worked in the rap game. (Or did I know and forget?)

Thanks for this, UBM.

I love Slum V. Have every one of their albums. Baatin and Dilla will definitely be missed.

Sooo sad to hear about Baatin. I'll never forget the first time I heard "I Don't Know" on Rhettmatic's Beat Junkies mix tape back in '97. My mind was officially blown, to say the least. With the unexpected deaths, I feel like these kats are almost like the hip-hop version of The Wailers.
