Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘It’s a Love Thing’

Yeah, SOLAR Records put out some hit singles... but not many great singles. And this ain’t one of those. (I’d rather be spinning “Career Girl” by Carrie Lucas. Oh well...)

Sorry for jacking this post but I just scrolled down and saw a picture of Henry Louis Gates and thought "that looks like a mugshot!" :-/

Sorry, you are wrong, UBM. This was and is still a jam.

^ Dissent is encouraged in the House of Love. But this cut doesn't hold a candle to "And the Beat Goes On."

On a larger level... with the distance of time... can we agree that there's something a little cheesy about the SOLAR sound?

CAREER GIRL is nice, but lyrically it's dated and groove-wise it can't touch LOVE THING, and neither can touch AND THE BEAT GOES ON.

SOLAR represents an period in black culture waiting to be more closely examined. It's not the greatness of 70s soul, but it's pre-hip hop, for better and worse.

But what is a better r&b label from that era? Shalamar, the Whispers, Lakeside...it's a real body of work.
