This is so unbelievably sad. I think it's become pretty apparent that unless there is some miracle, Detroit will never come back. I even have a feeling that if the carmakers file bankruptcy, they might leave the city too. What is the benefit of staying?
'Sup UBM. Longtime reader, first time poster. I just had to share this little bit of contrast: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/09/fashion/09fitness.html?_r=1&hp"Why white folks focus on dogs and yoga / While people on the low end tryin' to ball and get over?" -Common"I’ve seen what they’ve done to Earth / so I’m rooting for the Martians" -Heru
At what point do declare a city dead, like a medical does to a patient. I suppose never. It keeps falling into oblivion, like a object falling into a black hole. It goes from city to town to village. What happens to the tony suburbs surrounding a city when the hub collapses?
Car Industry+Kwame Kilpatrick+Bush = $50 houses @Anonymous that link is awesome. My pops calls this the "natural correction". Americans have always had the most. All over the world many people are living on a lot less. $15 for Doggie Yoga that sh*t could go to feeding people!

The fact that some suckas in Chicago are spending their fifteen dollars on some garbage for their hounds.. well shit.. now we finally have someone to blame..
@james, Relax I'm not blaming just WP for Detroit. My equation clearly included Kwame.
White, black, whatever, people stopped caring about Detroit YEARS ago. Between the Big Three and Urban Renewal, the city has been an experiment in disrepair. Interestingly, NOLA and DC have similar "city/urban" issues. The difference? Detroit is too cold for a real tourist economy (and Motown plueeeze), nor does it have the sustainability of federal paychecks (don't get me wrong, i want dc to keep living). What these three DO have in common is a local infrastructure that serves (or not) a primarily African American underclass. Sometimes the canary has to die before someone pays attention, and this bird has been chirpen for quite awhile.
