George Washington Carver speaks

It just wouldn’t be Black History Month without George Washington Carver. Am I right, y’all?

I’ve had a 13-second piece of audio on my hard drive since 2007, and it’s time I shared it. This is (to my knowledge) the only sound recording of George Washington Carver’s voice. Can’t even remember where I found it.

Click here to hear Prof. Carver on my Vox blog.

The Missouri History Museum has a Carver exhibit up right now and I was surprised that his voice had such a high pitch to it; his vocal cords were probably affected by his childhood illnesses though. Thanks for sharing...

A friend of mine does GWC for schools during BHM. He said the thing that threw him while researcing was hearing Carver's high pitched voiced.

Dr. George Washington Carver was castrated at the age of 7 so he wouldn't mix with the plantation owner's female family members while he worked in their home. His voice is high due to the castration being performed before puberty. Such a sad incident for such a brillant and intelligent man.

That Carver exhibit is now at the Museum of Mobile where I work, and today we saw the exhibit before it opens next Monday. There was an interview clip of him speaking, and everyone was surprised as well.
