... in New Orleans right now, waiting for my flight back to L.A. Guess who I’m staring at across the way?
Sidney Poitier!
He went through the security checkpoint just ahead of me, matter of fact. He hugged the TSA lady, and she was delighted.
Waiting at the gate now. Young white dude just went up and got Mr. Poitier’s autograph. Now a black woman’s posing for a picture with him. Neat.
3:46 p.m. (Central Time): Damn... now there’s a whole gang of white folks over there getting their picture took with Sidney Poitier. Looks like some kind of traveling youth group. Must be tough being famous.

Thanks for sharing this. That was a once in a lifetime event.
To Sir, With Love...
In 1990, I was lucky enough to meet Muhammad Ali in an airport. I was there to pick up my Mom, and on my way to the gate, he was sitting on his suitcase signing a booklet about Islam. He had two others under it, so I was thrilled to shake his hand and ask for one too.
15 minutes later I walked past after greeting Mom at the gate, and he had a crowd of a dozen around him. I'm not sure I've ever been so much in awe standing next to someone.
You knows Sidney is my geriatric crush...has been for years. He seems to deal very well with all of the attention. I guess after 50 years you might get used to it, or hate it, no in-between.
This is why you need to travel with the pilot script of your new HBO/NOLA based show at all times.
Maybe you could've gotten Sidney as a kick-ass guest star for the show. Always be Ready UBM!
Hmmm, maybe fellow Academy Award Winner Cuba Gooding Jr. is NOT to busy these days? (hehe)
You should've said: "They call me Mr. Tibbs!"
Cool!
Sidney is a true gentleman. He always makes you feel good...I've run into him several times, and he represents the best of the old school star.
The big question is did you talk to him?
^ I did not.
