Black is the new French.

Sincere thanks to my reader in Switzerland – Geneva Girl – for telling me about the recent Miss France pageant... and the fact that three of its five finalists have African roots.

The winner, Miss France 2009, is Chloé Mortaud... whose mom is a black woman from Mississippi. (Mortaud is pictured on the left.)

The third runner-up, Esthel Née, was born in Tunisia. (Pictured in the middle.) And fourth runner-up Bianca Taillard is from Madagascar.

Is this a proud victory for multiculturalism? A sad death knell for white civilization? Some same-old patriarchal bullshit? Or a big waste of time all around?

Whatever. Let’s just listen to Chloé getting her parlez-vous on:

I've read where the French slave traders were responsible for many more slaves than those brought to America.

Does anybody have some insight on this phenomenon?

If this is the dating game, I'll select mademoiselle #2 - what a smile...!!!

When did the US see its first non-white Miss America? Was it Vanessa Williams in the 80s? So the French are playing catch-up; one would expect the opposite.

A sad death knell for white civilization? HA!

Some same-old patriarchal bullshit? Yup - something like that.

Or a big waste of time all around? That too!

Maybe "Obama-fever" is the real deal, and it's taking over the world. Soon, when the words "Black Russian" are uttered, people won't instinctively think of the drink.

KeWayne, according to "The Diligent: A Voyage Through the Worlds of the Slave Trade" by Robert Harms, France was the "third largest participant in the slave trade after England and Portugal." The majority of slaves were taken to the French Caribbean colonies of Saint Domingue and Martinique. The French didn't "import African slaves into their own country." Surprise, surprise.

Okay, I'm surprised Bianca Taillard's name isn't 40 letters long with, like, 20 "A's". :-)

I'm right there with you, KeWayne. Something luminous about Esthel.

When I remarked to my French teacher that a cute, black girl had won Miss France he corrected me: She is not black, but "une métisse" (bi-racial). When I raised an eyebrow at him, he explained that the French make a BIG distinction between the two. He said that black was, well, REALLY black. I also learned that my teacher was métis as well. And all this time I thought he was just a regular black guy from Martinique.

My teacher also told me that previous winner, from Reunion, wasn't white. Again, she was a métisse, but I don't know what she was mixed with.

There is also some controversy surrounding Chloé Mortaud because she is franco-Américaine. It's the first time that a girl with a dual nationality has represented the country. She'll be at the Miss Universe pageant so you can check her out.

KeWayne, I too liked contestant #2, Miss Mayotte. Her interview, at least what I understood, was very dynamic. This law student wants to be France's Obama. Sadly for her, her makeup on the show just didn't "pop" and her hair just wasn't happening.

I checked out the Miss France web site (all in an effort to improve my French, of course) and was surprised by the number of girls whom I'd call black. None, however, would meet the French criteria for black.

Thanks for this one UBM.

Calling Nipsey Muhammad!

When whitey calls, you know I gots to jump... jump... jump Jim Crow!

Ah-ight, so here’s the deal with them frog-eatin’ freaks and their goddamn beauty contests.

Everywhere the French decided to colonize, they went balls-deep into the non-white womenfolk of every population they dominated... be it the aboriginal North Americans, the black slaves of the West Indies, or the comely “quadroons” of New Orleans. (Plaçage, anyone?)

And when they got around to colonizing West Africa, them horny Frenchies ended up schtupping the African women who served them as translators... resulting in numerous shameful mongrel offspring.

All of which is to say... Frenchmen have always dug the fineness of black women. They just gettin’ around to putting sashes and tiaras on ’em to make it legit!

(P.S. My captcha is "reckm." To which I say: "Reckm shit... kill 'em!)

It's illuminating to consider who some guy who can have any woman he chooses would select. I'll see all your French half breeds, and raise you Tiger Woods' choice:

I think you missed the point. Also, I don't believe anybody can 'have any woman he wants'. God blessed us with feminine pulchritude. Enjoy it.

Mahndisa, are you saying Elin's collar might not match her cuffs? Or, maybe the carpet doesn't match the drapes? Of course, she is Swedish, so maybe it is naturally blonde...

I am a big fan of French soccer, and it's very interesting to see the makeup of the French national team and their leagues. Algerians are well-represented in soccer (Zinedine Zidane, considered the greatest player of all time by many, was of Algerian descent). Not to mention so many of the black players.

Just before the World Cup began in 2006, a french politician commented that the national team doesn't really represent France (due to the prevalence of players with African heritage). There was some outrage over that comment.

In any case, this woman is gorgeous...of mixed descent and can speak fluent French? Wonderful.

Do you mind if I ask you a question?

Why was it that upon first seeing 3 French women with African roots you were motivated to think about "Slavery"?

CF,
Good question. When I read David's post, something clicked about the French and their antagonistic attitude towards America regarding slavery. I recalled reading where the French were very much involved in the slave trade and I asked if anybody had "...some insight on this phenomenon".

It wasn't a comment about the French or about the slavery issue in general; just a request for information. Do you have information or were you just curious about my motives?

I have not read your posts to know enough about your line of thinking.

The first thing that came to my mind after reading the subject matter of the post is that you MIGHT see a "slave" each time you see a Black person. I am just asking.

When I traveled to France 3 years ago I saw brown skinned people from all different origins - Africans, Indians, Caribbeans. (I fell in love more than 25 times - or maybe it was lust.) They have a larger diversity of Black people (origin wise and general looks and features) than we do here in the states.

My point is that "slavery and colonialism" while a significant source of Black people into France is certainly not the only channel.

Your comment was odd to me because absent any context it would be like a Frenchman seeing Vanessa Williams and then wondering if she was any relation to Kunta Kente'.
