One good side effect of the election of Barack Obama is... it shines a spotlight on the city of Chicago. I lived and worked in Chicago between 1983 and 1985. It remains my favorite American city.
Today’s FREE MP3 comes from Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, a hard-rocking Chicago band led by slide guitarist Lil’ Ed Williams.
Williams is connected by blood to the great tradition of Chicago slide blues. Lil’ Ed’s uncle and teacher was Hall-of-Fame bluesman J.B. Hutto.

I've Lil Ed & the Imperials several times. He's good. It's great to see J.B. Hutto on your sidebar. When I lived in Chicago, I saw him and Hound Dog Taylor often. Hutto played with more dexterity, but "the Hound" played with more passion. Both made their guitar cry on Elmore James ballads like "It hurts me too" and "The sky is crying."
^ Thanks for that, MacDaddy. When I lived in Chicago, I didn't check out any live blues at all. What a waste.
UMB,
With Lil Ed And J.B. on the same Bill...u just earned yourself a reach...... out and touch, somebody's.......
macdaddy....I am SOOOOO hatin on you right now.
I've see Lil Ed (and cousin Pookie...and the guy with the dice earrings) twice in Baltimore since I first met them in Chunky MS. Talent, Passion, and that Humbleness that all the true blues greats always seem to maintain. I remember talking computers with Pookie back in 88 (wopping 20 meg drives).
If you yelled "Chicken!" into my girls(9 and 10) room at 3 A.M....they'd both jump up and yell, "gravy and biscuits...I can eat em all night long".
Thx to my bestest friend, I've had the opportunity to see J.B. perform, on a bar....and out the door....then wax poetic about comebacks and life on the road.
My other all time fave slide guy is none other than Hound Dog....cuttingest guitar in the biz. With him, Mr. Brewer, and the maniac on drums.....I fear no evil. Man, I'd cut off my slide pinkie to see him play.
