Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘Shame’

Evelyn “Champagne” King was all of 16 years old when she recorded an R&B classic called “Shame.”

It’s a song I still warmly associate with high school. Evidently, though, “Shame” has never stopped rocking the dance clubs.

Thirty years later, Evelyn “Champagne” King is still touring and making records. Her 2007 album “Open Book” will be reissued in a couple of weeks.

And after an 18-year absence from the Billboard charts, Ms. King is now on the Hot Dance Club Play chart with a fresh mix of “The Dance.” (To stream it on my Vox blog, click here.)

Cheers to Mark in England (a.k.a. fastflyer2007) for uploading this 12-inch of “Shame.”

UBM, what are you trying to do to me? Seriously, have you somehow gained access to my iTunes folder?
My brother says I only like "gay runway songs." Hmm...

What struck me at the time was how young Evelyn was, I thought she was probably my age (I guess she's a little older).

Was that '76/'77? Can't remember if it was a summer song or not, but I think there were a few other hot records out around this time like "Best of My Love" by the Emotions. I'm a little shakey on the time frame.

Spring into summer of 1978. Roundabout the time of "Use Ta Be My Girl" and "Stuff Like That" (not to mention "Flashlight" and "Bootzilla"!)

I loves this book.
