MBP of the Week: Philadelphia Daily News

Call this one “Misidentified Black Olympian.” Yep, the Philadelphia Daily News published the following correction today:

“A photo caption in Saturday’s paper accompanying a story on the Olympic Games’ Opening Day ceremonies misidentified a member of the U.S. men’s basketball team. Standing next to Kobe Bryant was teammate Carmelo Anthony, not Allen Iverson.”

Allen Iverson ain’t even on this Olympic team!

I couldn’t find the original Daily News photograph. But I pulled one off the Web, just so you know what Carmelo Anthony looks like.

(Hat-tip: Philadelphia Weekly. With thanks to Adam.)

  1. You would think that after all the years Iverson played in Philly that a Philly paper would know what he looked like.

  2. I admit, I don't know all the b-ballers, so I wouldn't know Carmelo Anthony from J-Lo's Mark Anthony. But, I DO know that ain't Allen Iverson!

    Careless. Absolutely, careless.

  3. Absolutely right, dickster. You'd figure that if anyplace could ID Iverson, it would be a newspaper in Philly.

I mean, he'd been in their pages more than enough times, don't ya think?

  5. Philly WANTED that to be Allen Iverson. We miss him. That's all that is...

  6. Dang! My hometown paper couldn't even get it right. I hang my head in shame for them.

BTW, after getting the bronze last time, I thought that Iverson said that he wanted to go back to the Olympics. Why didn't he?

  8. Hey there!

    This is just beyond hilarious!!

I realize it points to a very disturbing issue but Carmelo and Iverson do not look ANYTHING alike!
    Carmelo is a black Latino!

    *LOL*

When we see an article in which Seal is mistaken for Lenny Kravitz, then we will KNOW this misidentification of the negro that the white media is notorious for has gotten out of hand!

    *LOL*

  9. Eh ...what does being a black Latino have to do with your ethnic appearance??? (Carmelo's pops is Puerto Rico)??? I mean, Michael Clarke Duncan and David Ortiz could pass for brothers, no? And Ortiz is a black Latino! LOL. Get my drift?

Anyway, both A.I. and 'Melo have braids so that's probably how the (white) editor got screwed up. It's weird tho 'cause A.I. is much smaller in stature than 'Melo so they just saw the plaits and kept on movin'. LOL.

Philadelphia Daily News has been a special kind of incompetent in our fair city for a long, long time.
