A free Blackalicious download

Continuing my string of daily FREE MP3s through the month of April... how do you feel about Blackalicious?

The hip-hop duo’s first single, way back in 1994, was titled “Swan Lake.” They sampled O’Donel Levy’s soul-jazz version of “People Make the World Go Round.”

You can download “Swan Lake” by clicking the song title below.

As a listening bonus, you can click here and hear O’Donel Levy’s 1974 track. It’s for sale at eMusic and Amazon.

Blackalicious' 2003 free show at the Prospect Park bandshell in Brooklyn was easily one of the ten best live performances I've seen in my life, and I didn't get the impression that it was, for them, anything particularly special. They're on the short list of acts that I would happily drop all other plans to see, anytime, anywhere. I'm still mystified as to how "Blazing Arrow" didn't turn them into international superstars.

Now if only they'd get the next damn album out.

O’Donel Levy is one of my all time favorites!

Dunno why he is not a name mentioned in the same breath as Montgomery,Benson,Django, etc.

Check the track "Bad,Bad,Simba"

Last I heard he owned a Jazz club in Singapore.

As well,I love using "Giants Of The Organ Come Together " when I am setting up turntables.

A Left/Right Stereo battle, with McGriff Vs.Holmes,Levy Vs.Freeman and Purdie keepin' it purty straight up the middle.

Nice one! I love Blackalicious and when my kid and I are fighting over the mp3s they're one of the bands that I try to use to lure him away from the louder noise. Ah well, a mother can only try.

BTW, caught the Regina Carter Quintet last night and I'm still floating. If you've never heard them live and get a chance, gooooooooo.
