Documentary filmmaker St. Clair Bourne has died. Media blogger Richard Prince broke this sad news today. (See his fourth item.)
Mr. Bourne was a longstanding hero of the black independent film movement. He directed “Paul Robeson: Here I Stand” for the PBS series “American Masters,” and he produced or directed documentaries about Gordon Parks, Amiri Baraka and John Henrik Clarke, among others.
He also directed “Making ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ” which is included in the Criterion Collection DVD release of the Spike Lee movie.
According to his website, St. Clair Bourne was in the midst of making a four-hour documentary about the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party.
I hate to hear this. I dug his work.
