Some George Clinton news

In his online tip sheet Tasty Clips, Bill Vaughan reports on the latest studio activities of our beloved Dr. Funkenstein (peace and blessings be upon him):

“P-Funk legend GEORGE CLINTON is about to return to the doo-wop roots of his original group The Parliaments with a new disc due from Shanachie in early 2008. Tasty Clips has an exclusive on some of the songs selected for the sessions. Look for covers of ‘Pledging My Love,’ originally sung by Tommy Edwards; ‘Our Day Will Come,’ the hit for Ruby & The Romantics; and ‘Sway,’ which Dean Martin and Bobby Rydell recorded.

“There will be several duets but the guest vocalists are not confirmed as of yet. Bobby Eli of Philadelphia International fame, who wrote ‘Side Show’ for Blue Magic, is producing the album.”

I’m not as thrilled as I should be by this news, for the simple fact that George’s singing voice is all shot to hell. His once-workable upper register was sounding pretty raggedy back in 1993 when he guest-vocaled on a couple of tracks by rockabilly artist Johnny Powers.

Listen yourself to their version of Hank Ballard’s “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go.”
