Name this saxophonist, win a prize.

Contest time again. This one’s for the jazz heads.

Simply click here, listen to the audio track, and identify that sax player… if you can. The first person to post the musician’s name in the comments section will win a prize.

That prize is “The Great Black Way: L.A. in the 1940s and the Lost African-American Renaissance.” This 2006 book is by RJ Smith, senior editor of Los Angeles magazine. (And he is a proud reader of UBM).

It’s about the golden age of the Los Angeles jazz scene… Mingus and Ornette, Dexter Gordon and Buddy Collette, Redd Foxx and Slim Gaillard…

So give it a shot, why don’t you?

UPDATE (06/04/07): No winner this time. Yo, I said this was one for the jazz heads.

The reed man is Wolfgang Puschnig, the pride of Vienna, Austria.

I figured somebody might peg the bass player as Jamaaladeen Tacuma and track it down that way. The tune is Ellington’s “Caravan.” It’s from a Tacuma-Puschnig CD titled “Gemini-Gemini.”

I’ll have to give away a copy of RJ Smith’s book next time.

Still not solved ??? No Jazz fans around??? I am no expert and haven't paid attention for ages.

Nice lite, nice rhythm, percussion. Who is the bass? A standard or at least something about it sounds very familiar.

Gato the cat Babieri? No not quite and he is American? Right?

^ This one was tailor-made for you, leaNder. Is Wolfgang Puschnig (an Austrian) well-known in Germany?

I'm just all you people wanted a copy of the book!

I thought Maynard played sax? At least, that's what I thought it meant by "Maynard plays Supersax" on the CD of his I have :-)

Are the Vienna Art Orchestra ...

You know there are so many. Would you know Chris Hirson or Geoff Goodman.

Geoff was one of the first Jazz guitars I liked. He's not one of the guitarists that constantly has to show you his expertise in speed, but can be very slow and very pronounced down to the single note.

Chis was a very, very good friend way back when, it was hard to survive without the gigs in summer.

So they went busking together through Freiburg pubs and restaurants. Never ever in my life will I forget their "Girl from Ipanema" (sp?) parody. The whole place were roaring with laughter, ever experienced something similar?

Shit happens!! I am very good in finding other people's spelling errors though: ;-) Are = aaaah! & missing question mark.

Yes I once listened to Wolfgang Puschnig life in concert, or more precisely the Vienna Art Orchestra.

Thanks for solving the riddle!

I have to return to my tasks. Although this triggered the image of a blind lady on sax once in Key Stone Corner (?Paddy from San Francisco?) in a session when everybody had left the place, including the two German guys, who had watched only that very girl making these odd or as they thought mad grimaces during the concert. They later reported for the leading German Jazz Mag.

Can anyone imagine leaving the place before the music ends?

Sorry I can't watch out for answers.

With all due respect, UBM, Wolfgang Puschnig isn't white, he's European. I thought you were more attuned to the nuances of race than that. ;-)
