found this at a place in Royal Oak Michigan called "Sams Jams" that is now closed. One of my prized possessions. Paid less than $10.00 for the 12". My childhood introduction to the jazz-funk stuff. Classic.
ah, i was just going to ask who's LP, turntable, etc. i have to say, the whole presentation, then unsheathing, a little unnerving. webcams freak me out. probably has more to do with me than you DRE. :)
do you know the song by him called "the real thing" that was written by stevie wonder? i was a kid and heard that in one of my summers in jersey, it was a real big hit--i still think it is one of the greatest songs, def my favorite by him, tho it sounds a wee bit dated now...

Sams Jams! I bought some records from there. Early '90s, I was in Detroit for the NABJ convention.
Loooved that record store. I found quite a few local 45s from the '60s on which George Clinton was a songwriter. Those singles are among my most prized possessions.
@bklyn6 omg diamonds! i forgot all about that, i loved that song... an odd combo musically, but that was my jam back in the day--thanks for reminding me :-)
also loved the ralph tresvant/janet song from from "mo'money"

ReplyDeleteGood call, IW. I love that song!
"Rise", not so much.
^ I've got mixed feelings about that Herb Alpert, Chuck Mangione-style not-quite-jazz, not-quite-funk pop-disco stuff.
ReplyDeleteDoes bring back memories, though...

ReplyDeleteI do like Alpert's "Diamonds" with Janet Jackson.
They should just call this song Luke and Laura. That's all I can think about when hearing it.

IW, after you mentioned Sergio Mendes I went to Amazon to buy the song. Then I realized that I already had it on a compilation CD. :-)
ReplyDeleteHe just played at the Nokia here on Times Square, wish I could've seen him but hopefully he'll swing by again at the tail end of his tour.
