Speaking of Michael Jackson impersonators...

... check out how Harry Connick, Jr., deals with some Australian douchebags. (Hat-tip: Donnell Alexander.)

i was so gonna post this a few minutes ago. i just didn't like how harry connick reacted. i thought it was so funny to picture his face when they came out. is it wrong to want him to be more upset? well you know he thinks he's black and is a part of the new orleans family.

get out of my head ubm get out!

Did you see what he said at the very end of this clip?

  5. As you may know UBM, I'm from Australia. It's pretty shameful. People here don't know the historical context of blackface, so everyone is saying that Americans are too PC and have no sense of humour. *Sigh*

Just so y'all know, we're not all that f*cking stupid.

I just posted about it actually. Check it here:

I think what Harry Connick Jr said was eloquent and appropriate. He recognised that the act wasn't mean-spirited, just insensitive and ignorant.

  6. ah i did watch the end of the clip. i just meant for me to find his reaction to be humorous he would of had to be more upset. enough for me to post the clip that is. he did respond well and w/o seeming ignorant.

  7. ^ Yeah... at the moment it happened, I bet he was too flabbergasted to think straight.

  8. And for our next act we are going to be dressed like Aborigines.

GTFOH, They knew exactly what they where doing!
Blackface is still Blackface even in Australia.

Harry earns a spot on my "Must Bed" list after such a courageous response at the end.

    They ALWAYS do.

Harry reminds me of a Simpsons character.

  10. This is what I get for being behind schedule.

I have given the hat tip to all my sources, 'cept you, even though you were the first on it, but missed my appointed rounds yesterday.

Should have known, you would catch this quick.

  11. Americans are the most hypocritical people I know (watch the Bruno movie). So full of your own self righteousness you fail to see your own shortcomings. Maybe peoples attitudes have changed, and maybe the skit wasn't that well thought out, but it was clear they were not being racist. They were simply doing an impersonation. These blokes were doctors, they were smart men, I bet they treat people from a wide range of cultural anc racial backgrounds. Dare I say, they may have even saved a few black peoples lives. I have a tip, get over yourself, have a laugh, and worry about your own backyard.

  12. Since Harry is from NOLA and is around more than thugs, gangsters and felons - he acted as I would have expected.

@ Big Time - sometimes a joke is not a joke. Being "educated" doctors, they should have known the difference.

  13. I don't get it. A bloke paints himself black for a movie and gets nominated for awards. A bunch of doctors paint themselves black for a harmless skit, and their is a worldwide uproar????The world has become oversensitive on such matters. Why was it a problem?? How is it racist?? The argument that black men had to suffer under the white man for hundreds of year blah blah does not sit with me on this matter. The people who use this argument for a simple skit are narrowminded trouble makers. In all reality they are simplifying something that was a bigger problem.

  14. @ Big Time - The Criminals Down Under already have a reputation for being racist.
Anything that could be seen as possibly racist would be seen as intentionaly racist.

Blackface/Whiteface is a dificult path to navigate.
    White Chicks - not racist
    Tropical Thunder - not racist
    This Skit - racist.

    "...blah, blah..."
No one even brought up a history of being subjugated by anyone white.
The Blackfaces worn in Soul Man or Silver Streak were attempts at humor within a certain context.
But why did the criminals have to make their version of Blacks seem like Buckwheat?
The intent was to demean - not to immitate.

  18. uglyblackjohn, are you racist! I feel insulted by your demeaning jibes aimed at my ancestors. Yes my family did come to Australia, as convicts and slaves of the English monarchy. Fortunatley though, we were able to get past this. I like how you pick and choose what you deam to be racist. You see a small snippet of a show, hear a few comments from the high and mighty Harry Connick Jnr, and then you pass judgement. Narrow minded trouble maker.

Go back into your shell which is the USA, and pretend that the rest of the world are not laughing at you.

  19. @ bbirney - No where did I mention race.
Actually, I have no problem with anyone because of their race, ethnicity or country of orgin.
The jibe was directed at Big Time and Anon 5:31 only.

You see, the joke is not so funny when it's about you.

  20. Blackface is blackface and it is never funny. I also posted about this after it happened. I was stunned at the number of Australians who hid behind nationalism to defend these performers.

Excellent Parallel. When you bring up the point about shackle dragging inbred convicts, then all of sudden its racist and demeaning and now they are offended, but when you think that a bunch of supposedly educated doctors, doing Black face is harmless and Americans are so sensitive, then its not a problem since some of us are just whiners.

    Give me a damned break.
