... and one of my last. Shoot, I didn’t think I’d have the stamina to go this long. But the time has come to put this blog on indefinite hiatus. I want my life back.I have posted pretty much daily since the summer of 2007... and I’m very pleased to have done so. For a while now, though, blogging has felt less like a happy hobby, more like an all-devouring compulsion.
It hasn’t been healthy. Blogging interferes with my sleep pattern. It distorts my food choices. It deprives me of adequate sunlight. (I think I have rickets.) And it has alienated me from people I love and like.
So it’s time to say good night to Napoli.
I thank all of you who’ve been reading Undercover Black Man. Treble thanks to those who leave comments. I will miss you. What joy there is in blogging comes totally from your feedback.
Having already invested time in a few more pieces, I will throw those up in the coming days. After that, I’m done.
The UBM archive of more than 2,000 posts (and 20,000 comments!) will stand in cyberspace like my own personal Stonehenge.
Plus there are nearly 1,400 sound files on my Vox blog. (We rocked some tunes up in here, didn’t we?) My Vox audio stash is Google- searchable:

As a white college student, it basically served as a daily reminder that I didn't know shit. ReplyDeleteAll weekend, I've been throwing down against my two old adversaries, Michael Fisher and Craig Nulan (both of whom used to comment here on the regular). The incendiary topic is race and genetics.
They think I'm a stooge of white supremacy because I endorse the mapping of DNA to study and compare genetic variations between Europeans, Asians and Africans.
I argue, basically, that if there are significant genetic differences between the average African, the average European and the average Asian... it is simply a matter of the quest for human knowledge to know what those differences are and to discuss what they might mean, socio-politically.
Because I believe that basic research such as the 1000 Genomes Project might radically impact the politics of race in this country.
See, this is why I gotta pull away from these worldwide internets. As long as I am tethered to this machine, I get drawn into all manner of time-wasting high jinks.

Almost completely gave it up the last time, but got *coaxed* into collaborating and consolidating with others... and so, here I am again. For how long? Who knows... but, it certainly helps when others have your back, so you don't feel like the entire operation is entirely on your shoulders. Feel like skipping a day or two? No problem, others will pick up the slack... at least, that's the hope.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, you are still black and must continue to live with that forever. You will walk into restaurants and people will always stare and wonder why you are there. At malls they will always stare and wonder why you are not hanging at the malls in black neighborhoods.
But, more importantly, for you and all blacks, you will not wonder why they look at you at you funny. You definitely know why and that will never change in your lifetime or your childrens.
I hope 'Treme runs for 20 years. But, it will not change anything.
