This is my 2,000th post...

... and one of my last. Shoot, I didn’t think I’d have the stamina to go this long. But the time has come to put this blog on indefinite hiatus. I want my life back.

I have posted pretty much daily since the summer of 2007... and I’m very pleased to have done so. For a while now, though, blogging has felt less like a happy hobby, more like an all-devouring compulsion.

It hasn’t been healthy. Blogging interferes with my sleep pattern. It distorts my food choices. It deprives me of adequate sunlight. (I think I have rickets.) And it has alienated me from people I love and like.

So it’s time to say good night to Napoli.

I thank all of you who’ve been reading Undercover Black Man. Treble thanks to those who leave comments. I will miss you. What joy there is in blogging comes totally from your feedback.

Having already invested time in a few more pieces, I will throw those up in the coming days. After that, I’m done.

The UBM archive of more than 2,000 posts (and 20,000 comments!) will stand in cyberspace like my own personal Stonehenge.

Plus there are nearly 1,400 sound files on my Vox blog. (We rocked some tunes up in here, didn’t we?) My Vox audio stash is Google- searchable:

Take it easy, y’all.

  1. To quote the late Florida Evans, DAMN DAMN DAMN. Your site is a compulsion to me too. I hit way too many times a day. I wondered how you kept it up.

Guess your show is about to be picked up. Congrats.

But I'm pissed. I"ll miss you man.

  2. I would like(no demands here) for you to seriously think about at least a monthly update.

The comments that brought you joy, have come from people that think of you as a friend, regardless of if they have met you in the meatspace.

To cut them off entirely from your world would be cruel and unusual punishment.

If there were a worthy substitute to your blog to migrate us to, even that would not ever be able to replace the one factor that made your blog so popular, you.

    I wish you well.

  3. Well April 1st has come and gone so I guess this is for real. Damn, damn, DAMN!

I've enjoyed this blog SO much. (It hadn't occurred to me that there are psychosomatic effects of blogging.)

    Happy 2000th post!

Have a happy and healthy post-blog life. :-)

  4. Guess your show is about to be picked up. Congrats.

That's premature, dude. We won't know the fate of "Treme" till late May or early June.

Regardless, I need to get myself together to take another run at Hollywood. That'll mean losing weight, eating right, quitting smoking, etc. I really need to focus on getting my body, mind and soul right.

But I'm very grateful to you, dude, for your many contributions to this enterprise.

  6. The blog was tight

    thanks from France !

  7. Good luck. I've enjoyed your posts for the year or so I've been reading.
As far as losing weight and quitting smoking, you can do it. I lost 80 pounds a few years ago and quit smoking two years ago.
It's the best thing I've ever done.
    You'll be fine.

  8. Aww, I'LL MISS YOU DAVID!! Lol.

    Your blog anyways. :(

I figured your being a journalist made it easier for you to write, but I guess even that can only help so much.

Its been great reading you for so long and since you're in my Google Reader, I'll hope you'll at least tell us if, when your show get picked up.

    Salaam UBM!

    Wanda

(this is almost as bad as leaving World of Warcraft)

  9. I'm with the countless readers (devotees? groupies? acolytes?) who'll miss you, too, David . . .

. . . and just may toss an occasional email 'cause, y'know, I just can't quit you, man.

    - Alan,
who first met you waaay back on Amanda's Usenet NYPDB forum, before you even knew you were UBM

  10. Shame to see you go man, my google reader and I will miss this! Best luck with the projects & wherever non-blogging takes you!

  11. Dude! How am I going to get my P-Funk alerts? Seriously, like so many I will miss you. You have been a major pop culture touchstone. (Banjos, indeed.) You have been a great musical source and political outlet. (I don't always agree with your liberal take, but I always read it. For the record, you seemed pretty objective for a liberal!)

I don't blame you at all. I wish you the best. I'll be following your future endeavors.

    Much Love

  12. Oh, I forgot I changed to "Desert Man" until recently, I signed "James"

  13. If you're leaving the blog to get your health together and focusing on your career, then I am happy.

I understand first hand that re-engaging with the Hollywood beast is like training for the heavyweight fight.

On the real, any excuse for you to stop smoking is enough for me.

But damn, I still can't get my mind around this!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sad news, but tempered by the fact that you're hanging up your keyboard to once again fight the beast of Hollywood... Thanks for all your hard work, random videos and gifts of music over the past year or two and good luck out there in the real world... Hopefully you'll still answer the siren call from time to time when the inspiration strikes-- sleepless nights or sudden fits of rage or just coming across something too good not to share... The beauty and curse of this internet is that it's there for whenever...

  15. So long Undercover Black Man,

I enjoyed reading your posts and I like your parting photo.

Good luck with getting your body et al right.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haven't been reading long, but have enjoyed the short interlude. Best of luck as you break free from the pull of the cyberworld. Maybe if you feel the urge to blog, smoke, eat a 7-eleven burrito, drink a red bull -- wade in the ocean, hug a tree, take a walk or something. To a healthier (and happier) UBM!

    Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Aw man. I totally get the needing to concentrate on yourself thing, but we'll miss you out here.

Come back and visit once in a while, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Best wishes, David. I hope when you pop back every now and then when you're working on some cool project - which I know you will be!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well Dayum! Now I know what it's like to get a Dear John letter!

Baby, it's not YOU, it's ME!

    ::::kidding:::

I completely understand even though I'm not happy to see you go away.

What does Nipsey have to say about all this? Maybe he can pick up where you left off?

OK, I'll let go. You'll be missed!

  21. procrastinating redcoatApril 27, 2009 at 10:57 AM

CRAP! Won't you even consider Twitter, UBM?

This redcoat will miss your musings and bon mots on Japanese weirdness, fine asses, race, Laurence Auster, funk music, etc. and so on.

What a fine and eclectic ride this has been. All the best with your new gig, mate.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It was a great run, kid! You have turned me on some great music along the way! You will return to this kind of work in some other form...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Vaya con Dios mi amigo.

Get that tan, try Nicorette, and run after a booty on the beach. You will accomplish all of the above.

  24. UBM,

I hope you get as good as we got from you.

    See you on Treme.

    All the best,

  25. Wow! I will be truly sad to see you go. I've really enjoyed reading you. Good luck with everything. You'll be missed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Say it isn't so. My son and I have enjoyed your blog so much over the past year or so (Especially the crazy giant negro series). In fact, not too long ago he commented on the number of posts you were able to put up. If wondered what kind of job you had that allowed you so much time to post.

Anyway, you inspired me to begin blogging. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  27. WHAT?! NO!
Oh, ok, you do deserve a life. But I will go insane if you stop blogging. Finding your blog was a turning point in my life--I'm serious and I say that at risk of making myself sound sad, LOL--but on those rough days, I looked forward to reading it. And it inspired me to start blogging too.

Go. Rest. But don't go too far away.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Finding your blog was a turning point in my life--

Bless you, Kellybelle. On the positive side, now I'll have time to comment more often at your wonderful blog... and others I'm following.

  29. 'The Allness of Everything' is a tune by Sun Ra, title sums up... well pretty much anything at any given moment.
So here's my vote of confidence in your present and future activities, and it was really a pleasure to get w/ you in the Apple for a minute.
    Peace, CB

  30. Thanks for the memories,(& "mammories" in the case of Ms. Del Rio!),Your blog posts will stand the test of time for us & many more viewers to follow! Now, go get your life back!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for a great ride. I look forward to seeing your work on the screen, where it always shines.

    ReplyDelete
  32. NOOOO! Please don't go!! :( Your blog is one of the best!! *sniff sniff* WAHHHHH!

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. SIGHHHH. Damn. Really though? I mean I DEFINITELY get it and all but ugh. This bothers me. I know its not about me, its about you.

    2. UBM, you have inspired and encouraged me more than you probably realize! I have literally changed my career path in large part from your validation of my lil musings. But again, not about me, about you.

    3. Just last week I was accepted to a graduate writing program at USC, so I'm on a Philly-based quest to leave this cheesesteak body behind and get all LA on these hoez as well. I'm still so freaked over financial aid etc but it looks like the move is really happenin'...I start in August. I guess the fact that I'm coming to LA is part of why you can stop blogging without any problems.

Oh wait, not ME, YOU. Sigh again.

Ok. At least consider twitter...? Its actually worthwhile! Im /thembithembi

    ReplyDelete
  34. 4. And on second thought, the least you can do is start a spin-off type of blog that consists SOLELY of Random Japaneseness. You're gonna go crazy if you don't have a depository for such madness.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 5. And also maybe some Vox updates at least? Jeez, give us somethin'...

    ReplyDelete
  36. At least consider twitter...?

Trade heroin for crack, in other words? No thank you, Thembi. I hate Twitter at the conceptual level. It's a reduction-unto-absurdity of short-attention-span Internet culture and morbid self-attention.

Now... BIG CHEERS to you, Thembi, for that USC move! You're a talented writer and you're hilarious to boot. Philly's loss is definitely SoCal's gain.

Hit me up on Facebook when you get out here.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Best wishes in the future and thanks from the long-ago freshman who enjoyed your Diamondback editorials and always wondered what happened with you. I'm just glad I found you here, even if it was brief.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My first comment and I guess my last. I love your blog. You've been a daily stop for more than a year. Thanks for the music...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dave, I'll miss dropping in here every morning, but I understand completely. Another one of my favorite bloggers, Phil Nugent, has also thrown in the towel recently.

One thing I like about blogging is you really aren't held to any sort of deadline. But you're right, it can be an obsession. Whenever I haven't posted for a few days I find myself obsessing over my Google Analytics figures & trying to think up something new to write about to get my numbers back up.

One of these days I too will hang it up.

It would be great to be like Andrew Sullivan and get paid to do this!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hate to see you go, even though I don't comment much. Your posts got me to queue The Wire on Netflix (well, that and how so many people say it's the best show ever). I'm enjoying it so far. I wondered how you could post so much though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hope you are leaving the blog open for when you want to post something...

Or do you fell like it has to be cold turkey?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Or do you fell like it has to be cold turkey?

Must be cold turkey. (After I post a few more items, that is.)

If the blog stayed "live," I would feel compelled to update it. I must convince my central nervous system that it's over.

    ReplyDelete
  43. When I first commented to this post I felt like Ice Cube at the end of his "Today Was a Good Day" video--and it wasn't even 10am.

    *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  44. UBM, please don't start on twitter.

Ok so all the greats have done this, Jordan, JayZ, Muhammad Ali, Magic, and I believe Oscar De Le Hoya just did it. It is only fitting that you end your chapter at the top of the game.

#1 blogger living. (fuck the stuffthatwhitepeople like)

You should retire and get back to living a happy normal life, that is ultimately what we all wish for you.

You have certainly changed me (No porn and Gossip) and made me believe in the power of intelligent writing again.

I will miss it, but I know that you are only human and if you think you want to get all sexy and shit so be it, but f*ck that don't quit smoking that's not important. (Just kidding)

Please note: This is my second comment. My first comment was a desperate cry for you to not do this, but my crackberry failed me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So despite what other bloggers would like to claim, having a blog and having a life really are mutually exclusive. Good to know.

Kidding aside, I'm going to miss this blog quite a bit. I'm pretty sure I've been here since damn near the beginning. As a white college student, it basically served as a daily reminder that I didn't know shit. Even without this blog, I hope you maintain some sort of ocassional online presence (and not fucking Twitter!). Enjoy yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Do your thing, UBM. Loved, loved, LOVED the blog but love you more. You need to do right by yourself so we can share many more plates of sushi.

Honestly, I'll be glad to have one less reason to procrastinate.

PS I've dropped nearly 20 pounds since December if you need some tips. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  47. UBM good luck and may God for ever bless you...but who's going to let us no about the Misidentified Black Person of the Week?

    ReplyDelete
  48. You betcha. I was there for the past 3 weeks myself, and am still on the ledge...it's weird, tho, I feel like I really will miss you
    :-(

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sorry to see you go, David. I'm going to miss my daily dose of UBM.

    ReplyDelete
  50. oh, no. i'm so bummed! the blog was a real work of art; i can see how it could pull the life out of you.

thanks for such great posts. you really broadened my horizons and made me think about stuff. i loved that you welcomed critics to comment and kept hitting them but they kept coming back.

i do believe you were practicing a lost sort of long-form journalism. or how they taught us to write editorials in J school if you had something to say. you need FACTS, not just opinions.

you set a standard for me that i expect other blogs to meet--and few do.

you're a great story teller of fact, astute observer of your own life. the stories you told on yourself i retold to my kids. they feel like they know you, too.
i think the first post i ever read was about how your car smelled like filet-of-fish two days later.

but i won't forget your greatest hits either, how you sussed out that fake black power obama site and kept auster on his toes.

we'll miss you, david. some little part of my daily life is about to go silent.

    ReplyDelete
  51. NOOOOOO!!!!!

    Oh well, okay.

Best of luck, David. Thanks for everything. You're a true independent thinker, and not somebody posing as one to get attention. Which I think means you'll never have a really easy life. Do what you need to do, and I hope it all goes well.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Going to miss this place a lot, David. But will always be thankful for the knowledge and entertainment you provided. Know that there are many people out there who you've touched, educated and amused--Even though this is only my second comment, your page has been a daily addiction for me since Sepinwall hyped you back when you started. Looking forward to great things from you in the near future, UBM.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  53. You will be missed online! I was fairly regular reader and was always honored when you picked up on something I had done musically. I'm sure you're moving on to bigger and better things and I wish you all the best with them.
    peace
    Melvin Gibbs

    ReplyDelete
  54. ^ Oh my goodness... thank you for that, Melvin.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The reason I haven't been up in here all day, thanking all you sweet people one-by-one for your positive vibes... well, it's because I'm in full Internet-compulsive mode, embroiled in a wild-ass "blog war" at Denmark Vesey's place.

All weekend, I've been throwing down against my two old adversaries, Michael Fisher and Craig Nulan (both of whom used to comment here on the regular). The incendiary topic is race and genetics.

They think I'm a stooge of white supremacy because I endorse the mapping of DNA to study and compare genetic variations between Europeans, Asians and Africans.

I argue, basically, that if there are significant genetic differences between the average African, the average European and the average Asian... it is simply a matter of the quest for human knowledge to know what those differences are and to discuss what they might mean, socio-politically.

Because I believe that basic research such as the 1000 Genomes Project might radically impact the politics of race in this country.

See, this is why I gotta pull away from these worldwide internets. As long as I am tethered to this machine, I get drawn into all manner of time-wasting high jinks.

If you got a couple of hours to kill, though, you can check out Thread 1 and Thread 2 of the shenanigans...

More than 200 comments thus far, and the battle's still raging.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This has been perhaps my favorite blog SINCE summer 07, even though I'm not big on music. Good luck, man.

    ReplyDelete
  57. it's weird, tho, I feel like I really will miss you
    :-(
I know, right? We don't even know this man :) Such is the power of UBM.

oh, I've seen many of the squabbles you get into on DV's blog, UBM. This latest one is the motherlode.

You'd rather see her twerk it, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh Snap! You are legendary! I can't imagine what you'll do with all of your free time. You'll no doubt develop a really bad habit. Please be sure to include your friends... Take Care Brother and God Speed!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Take care UBM! One of my favorite moments: you PWNing Lawrence Auster on that nice English lady's site. Classic thread, even closing with the perfect smackdown from the proprietor.

The Corner and the Wire = amazing television.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Say it ain't so! I'll miss ya. Definitely one of my favorite blogs... and I only have a couple. All the best to you.

  64. Dude....gonna miss ya posts. Internetting is time consuming and health is more important.
    Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I laughed. I listened. I agreed. I disagreed. I had fun.

Good luck in all that you do!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ya know, this blog became a favorite the very second I discovered it; checking it out almost everyday. It was good to check out your perspective on various topics, but I especially enjoyed the music. I fully understand you having to get yourself right, so I guess you gotta move on and do you...

But, I'm still gonna continue to check this blog on the regular; there's lots of posts I've yet to take a look at, probably some good stuff I missed out on, as well as other posts (and comments) that I will enjoy reading again and again. Thanks.

One more thang though, there has to be someway to convince Nipsey to get his own blog started, hahahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Where am I going to lurk now. Damn. Thanks for the daily read.

    /bluezulu

    ReplyDelete
  68. And now it's time to step away from the computer and come into the light.

Remember when you used to take long walk outside regularly?

I will miss being able to read you here, but hope to actually speak to you, and maybe even see you now.

And, as always, looking forward to your next magnificent obsession.

    ReplyDelete
  69. This was not a good way to start off the day. Where am I gonna get my semi-regular dose of wild-ass YouTube videos now?

But I wish you best of luck in your quest to take your life back. I totally understand.

Vaya con dios, fam. We're really gonna miss you.

    I love it :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Dang! I feel like I've just been dumped. Seriously, I'm happy to hear that you want to get your life back, but sad that I'll miss my daily chuckle.

Please do try to get healthier. Your blogs about what you eat are a bit scary. As is what you sometimes find randomly hot.

There's probably a book in here somewhere. I'd love to read it. Thank you so much for bringing joy to grey and dreary Geneva. Much luck.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Whoa! I go away for few and return to read this...

I completely understand though. I've been there several times in the last 2 years since I started blogging. Start, stop, start, stop, and so on...

Almost completely gave it up the last time, but got *coaxed* into collaborating and consolidating with others... and so, here I am again. For how long? Who knows... but, it certainly helps when others have your back, so you don't feel like the entire operation is entirely on your shoulders. Feel like skipping a day or two? No problem, others will pick up the slack... at least, that's the hope.

    Good luck brah!

I've got your email address, so I'll definitely stay in touch.

    ReplyDelete
  73. UBM,

Wow! I certainly understand how blogging can takeover one's life. After all it happened to me.

I'm very happy to have found your blog. It seems so long ago I can't really remember how it was that I stumbled in here. Lol

Anyway thanks for all of your hard work! Take care of yourself. :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Good luck, David. You are a good man.

Unfortunately, you are still black and must continue to live with that forever. You will walk into restaurants and people will always stare and wonder why you are there. At malls they will always stare and wonder why you are not hanging at the malls in black neighborhoods.

But, more importantly, for you and all blacks, you will not wonder why they look at you at you funny. You definitely know why and that will never change in your lifetime or your childrens.

I hope 'Treme runs for 20 years. But, it will not change anything.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm sorry to read that you're moving on David, but glad to hear you're going to be taking care of yourself and getting out more. Enjoy the So Cal sun and catch some of that fantastic music you've done such a great job of highlighting. I wish I had posted more comments, but UBM has long been an essential stop on my late night procrastination rounds when I should be finishing up a story (and you turned me on to Ta-Nahesi Coats before he got the Atlantic gig). Drop me a line when you're heading back up to the Bay Area. And as for Nels, thought you might be interested in a recent review of "Coward" and Alex Cline's "Continuation" (http://www.californiareport.org/archive/R903061630/d). All the best, Andy

    ReplyDelete
  79. Nooooooo!

Think of all your eager online fans - we might just have to get off the internets and get some exercise or something :(

Hopefully this is like when MJ "retired" to play baseball, right?

I've really enjoyed reading your posts, and its been great inspiration for my own blog.

    All the best!

  80. relax, refresh and release good brother...enjoyed the blog. nothing last forever; but you can always go back. about 10 years ago, (when you were doin' UNcut Funk) i sent you my writing samples for a critique. Your generous encouragement was a stepping stone that got me regular freelance work with RapPages and XXL. i thank you.

For real? I didn't leave you hanging? That doesn't sound like me.

Nice to hear from you, Ronnie. (It's been closer to 20 years, actually. What a mind-blower that is.)

It's not so much the blogging but the surfing for content and then the fact checking, and responding to long-winded poops like me, and then trying to get the writing tight so people don't read "idiot" into your post. Take a break, get your house in order, then try something else like having people guest blog or blog every other day (I do that). Or haiku blog. Twitter has disciplined me on word economy. This is getting long. In other words...please, please, don't go. Think it over.

  90. I just discovered the greatness that is this blog not too long ago.
At least I can enjoy the archives!

    Good luck in your doing-something-besides-blogging-all-the-time!

Peace to you. Thanks for everything.

  91. UBM, I must say...in this short time, it's been an honor and a privilege. Thanks for mad love on the Kodac video over on youtube (yours was the FIRST comment!), and best of luck with Treme'. Godspeed, my friend. Godspeed.

  92. I have had a great time reading your posts on here.

A while back I posted a D'Angelo video in your comment section that you later featured in your little upper right section of your page. Glad you liked it.

So I think this is an appropriate send off:

Thanks for all of the food for thought and best of luck with your future endeavors.

    Thanks for everything!

  95. David,

Just to reiterate and expand on what anon said above: You put a lot of work into this blog and it showed.

I understand the need to go cold turkey and everything, but tip us off if you start up another blog?

May Treme become a franchise, a tentpole, even.

We'll be looking out for you. Best of luck!

  96. Despite it all, I certainly enjoyed your blog almost every day. It was nothing if not highly interesting and entertaining. I know how you feel though.

You still a racist mofo, though.

    Still...

    Good luck, Mills.

    You'll be missed.

    Pray for me, Mike.

And thanks for the good wishes.

  98. ... but tip us off if you start up another blog?

Tyrone, just the thought of that makes my stomach cramp.

    But thanks for the vibe.

  99. Wow have to say I'm very sad to hear this. Have followed you since the beginning. Came for The Wire, stayed for damn near everything else.

    You will be missed.

Btw I'm with you on the getting "body and soul right". Spending hours on the internet has not been good for me either. Was planning on getting healthier over the summer, so let's do it together.

  100. Will never forget ATTACK OF THE GIANT NEGROES!! I have learned more about this country's history when it comes to race than anywhere else.

  101. Dear UBM,

I understand your reasoning but I sure hate to see you go. Your blog is unique in the entire blogisphere and I don't think there's anything out there that will come close to filling the hole that you will leave.

But I wish you the best and hold out hope that some day you'll return to blogging. Hey, face it. That's your true calling. Good luck!

  102. Thanks so much David for your consistently provocative, well-researched, thoughtful, funny writing. I guess if I want to keep up with your work I'll have to start watching TV! There's worse fates I guess. Here's to your health - and I hope you enjoy your time far away from computer screens.

  103. I know I haven't been around much (life and all that taking precedence), but I will miss this place muchly. Break a leg in all your endeavors, David--I look forward very much to your future output :-)

  104. I will miss your blogging, but I am happy that you're putting more time into your offline life. You deserve happiness. :-)

Your time and energy were tremendous gifts and I just wanted to let you know that your work was greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your words, and I look forward to your future projects.

Peace and love to you and yours,

  106. I'm adding my belated dismay and the suspension of your blog. I didn't contribute much, but it was a source of education for me.

Who will I give any MBP's I find to now?

Hope the show gets picked up. You are doing DC proud.

  108. And yet I find myself still checking daily, like you are one of my limbs, lost in a sudfden, tragic accident.

I continue to feel the phantom pain as I lift the sheet and discover, you really are gone.

Oh, man! Just surfed here after wrapping up school only to find you're off to make your own web (Charlotte's Web!)!

Thanks for everything you have researched, dug up, critiqued and just plain found! This grad student learned a lot, lol...looking forward to Treme...

  111. Huh? I'm so sorry to hear that you are going to stop.

I love your style. In my case, blogging is fun....but then again, writing is as natural as drinking water for me. And it gives me the opportunity on my own turf to say what I want and no one can do a thing about it.

    Reconsider....blog less....but why totally quit?

  112. I've been checking out your blog for awhile now, and I just wanted to say good luck with life!

I actually just started a blog in January, and your blog was one of the inspirations to do so... always really unique quality posts. Thanks!
