I can’t believe Roger Ebert ragged on “Full Metal Jacket.”
And I dare suppose that few people now believe “Platoon” was a better movie... even though “Platoon” won an Academy Award for Best Picture (while “Full Metal Jacket” got just one Oscar nomination... for writing).
“Full Metal Jacket” has a dream-like magic about it. Always did.
Anyways... enjoy Gene and Roger going hard at each other.
Full Metal Jacket is awesome in boot camp. It suffers when it hits Vietnam, when it's sardonic and funny, it stumbles and never gets up at the final action sequence.
ReplyDeletePlatoon has less wit and filmmamking bravura, but it has a seriousness (sometimes too serious) and realism that is moving and ultimately really good.
I really dig these Siskel and Ebert interludes you post. It was sad to see Siskel when he was obviously sick. I always liked him. Like both, in fact.
ReplyDelete^ Thanks, DeAng. It trips me out to realize how much I remember of these guys' comments and arguments... going back 25 years.

ReplyDeleteI need to see that one again, Joe. "Platoon" just didn't leave a lasting impression on me.
One of the best war films of all time. If you haven't yet, watch it now!
