Hard to believe I’ve been blogging for nearly two years and haven’t mentioned Teena Marie.
She put out some good records during my heavy radio-listening years. My favorite was one of her smaller hits – “Midnight Magnet.” (Damn... 25 year ago??)
Teena Marie is still gigging. She played a show in New Orleans earlier this month. (Her next album, according to Wikipedia, will be titled “Congo Square.”)
This 1980 single was her first Top 40 hit:
Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Teena Marie! I LOVE this woman's music! I am not that fond of her new stuff but if I ever get married, my reception is gonna be nothing but Teena, Teena and Teena, lol
ReplyDeleteMidnight Magnet was the bomb!
ReplyDeletethe album she put out a couple of years ago was excellent.
I LOOOOVED me some Teena Marie in college! When I did the backpacking thing after college I had to go to Portugal because of her song Portuguese Love. Didn't find any love, but my passport did get stolen there. Thank goodness I didn't follow my other inclination to go on the Marrakesh Express.

For some reason I was never a big Teena Marie fan, not that I disliked her or anything. I could listen to her songs, but I wasn't trying to see in concert. I feel this way about a few other very popular artists; but, for fear of tar and feathering, I will remain silent.
ReplyDelete^ Now I gotta know! Which others? (And don't say Chaka Khan.)
ReplyDeleteNo, Chaka's cool. I could never get down with Luther Vandross. With the exception of his work with "Change" I just was never into him. Not a big Anita Baker or Freddie Jackson fan either. And I don't care how pretty they were Debauched just weren't my cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteThere! I said it. Am I banned?
^ It's all good. I kinda lost interest in Luther after the "Never Too Much" album myself.
ReplyDeleteI had to go to an emoticon dictiontionary and I still don't know what you said.
ReplyDeleteGG, that's my "winsome smile."

LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteJesus man, did you have to put our age out there?! I'm sure I was rocking Midnight Magnet in Elkton at the same time you were. She was free in Baltimore a few years back...the Vanilla Child still has the chops.
