Journeyman R&B performer Carl LeBlanc put out an album this year called “New Orleans’ Seventh Ward Griot.” LeBlanc is a banjo strummer with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.The solo album focuses on his singing and guitar playing.

Very nice. I love people like this, who I always think of as having their feet on the ground and their heads in the sky. He's knowledgeable enough about tradition to have a steady gig with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but also comfortable with present-day techniques: the use of sampling in this song doesn't come across as a gimmick. Who knows? W.E.B. DuBois might have approved.

ReplyDeleteVery nice and very tite. Loved the double bridge and Jamerson nods.... It's one of my fave Motown cuts, out of the hundreds I've heard. If he hadn't done it justice, I'd be on him like FEMA 08. Only tiny beef is that he screwed up my childhood lyrics:
