Morris Day and the ‘Original Time’ on Leno tonight!

Here’s some funk news that caught me off guard. All the original members of The Time are together again for a five- night stand in Las Vegas.

That’s Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and Jerome Benton... plus, of course, Morris Day in front. (I knew they’d reunited for the Grammy show in February, but damn!)

For a ticket price ranging from $53 to $97, you can check out The Time – billed as “The Original Time featuring Morris Day” – at the Flamingo on the Strip from July 29 thru August 2.

And/or... you can see ’em tonight for free on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

Below is a 30-second ad that was posted on YouTube a few days ago.

  1. Cool.

I saw them many years ago, but I don't think it was the original line up.

Now, how 'bout a Vanity 6 reunion!

  2. Bklyn6: LOL--Vanity 6 + Apollonia. With Carmen Electra as an opening act.

Why are the called The Original Time? Were they touring w/o Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis before?

  3. ^ Yeah, Kellybelle, I think Morris and Jerome been out there with a no-name band in recent years.

  6. Why does Jesse Johnson all of sudden look like Buddy Guy? What the hell happened to THAT dude.

My greatest shame is that i actually have not one but TWO Jesse Johnson albums in my vinyl collection. It's right next to the Andre Cymone album and two albums away from The Family.

  7. The "no-name band" are actually good musicians that have to step down when they have the opportunity to make real money. This happens a lot.

Hee-hee... I wish the camera'd been on him when he took his sexy sola.

As for your personal shame, Eric... all my Minneapolis jawns are on cassette. Jesse, Andre Cymone, the Family... Ta Mara and the Seen, Tyka Nelson...

Yeah, whatever. I wouldn't spend $75 to see some journeyman cover band.

But for Jellybean, Jesse 'nem? I'm thinking hard about it.

Ta Mara and the Seen, too! Dang! I only have Andre Cymone's AC on cassette. All my other MPLS sound cassettes and Lps were lost.

LOL, kellybelle. I wonder how many people still make the Carmen Electra-Prince connection.

Re: Jesse Johnson. I saw him at the Ritz YEARS ago. He threw a pink teddy bear into the audience and I caught it. Well, I practically snatched it out of my mother's hand (Yeah, my mom was with me.) It was like catching the bridal bouquet. I still have it, too! :-D

  11. Yeah, I guess so! :-)

I got to sit on Jackie Wilson's lap when I was a baby. I believe it was during a concert/show that my mom took me to.

  12. On that Carmen Electra connection, there's an old video EP floating around that I think only went to the press of SEXY MF. Prince's best video in my opinion with fine ass Troy Beyer in the hot chick role.

Anyhoo, at the end of that tape is a promo for Carmen Electra where she's twirling around a stripper pole and it has this bizarre female voice-over saying "Prince introduces - The. Scariest. Woman. In. The. World. "

It's freaky as hell. Two years later she showed up on MTV taking over for Jenny whatshername on that game show - and the rest is history.

  13. ^ I actually have, on the other coast, a promo CD of Carmen Electra's Paisley Park album. I never spun it once.

  14. Hey there!

Jimmy Jam and T Lewis were part of the group The Time??

    I never knew that.

    Wow!

Thanks for bringing back the FIRST Metrosexual group who became a smash hit!

From that comment, Lisa, I deduce that you are 28 years old. ;^D

Jimmy and Terry actually started to branch out and write for other artists while still with The Time. It contributed to their getting fired by Prince.

Here is the song that launched Jam & Lewis as independent hitmakers.

  16. My son and I just saw them at the Flamingo on July 30th. They were absolutely awesome! All of the members are so incredibly talented and to have them all back together performing, it was amazing. If you love old-school, you've got to go see this concert!
