Five months ago, I pointed y’all to a FREE MP3 from Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Santi White, a.k.a. Santogold.
Well... her self-titled album finally came out this week. (Got a thumbs up from the Village Voice.) Now Santogold is packing her bags for a monthlong tour that’ll take her to the U.K., France, Belgium, Germany and Spain.
(Here is a short video interview with Santogold, uploaded by the British site NME.com.)
And I’ve got another free download for you. This track isn’t on the album. To hear “Your Voice” streaming on my Vox blog, click here.
To download it, follow this link to RCRD LBL.
Below is the weird-ass video for Santogold’s current single, “L.E.S. Artistes.”
Cool video. Why do people compare her to M.I.A. though?
ReplyDeleteI never heard of M.I.A. before stumbling on Santogold. Haven't checked out her music.
ReplyDeleteWhen I clicked on the link to her MySpace page I was immediately hooked by that "Creator" joint.
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of her until this post, but my first thought was of M.I.A.* (Okay, I actually thought about Yma Sumac, when I heard the intro to "Creator" but that lasted for about a split second.)
I like what I've heard so far. I'm going to buy the CD. (This blog's got me spendin' lots o' money! *smile*)
*UBM, You might appreciate M.I.A.s cover/sampling of Dr. Buzzard's "Sunshower." (I have both songs on my mp3 player.)
The video is borrowing from a epic film by Alejandro Jodorowsky called 'Holy Mountian'. Santo's music is far from mainstream and that is what makes it speak to the millions of people who want to listen to something other than pop music. That said I am happy Santo chose NOT to make a convential music video. And while the video may be 'weird' it has no negative or exploitive images of black women or anyone else for that matter.
ReplyDeleteAlso Santo uses M.I.A.s producer Diplo on a lot of the album, hence the similar sound. But for a better view of her range check out her older work under the band name 'Stiffed' and an album she co-wrote with Res titled 'How I Do'
^ Thanks for the comment. I like this video... though it certainly seems pitched at European tastes, more so than American.
ReplyDeleteNot a problem. It's our own fault that Europeans seem to dig progressive black artists more than we do here.
