To celebrate the springtime, I’m on another splurge of free music downloads... pointing y’all to a new MP3 every day throughout the month of April.
Starting today with Nina Simone.
A digital album of previously unreleased interviews and live performances by Ms. Simone is coming out next Tuesday. It’s called “Protest Anthology.”
One track, “Revolution,” is available now as a FREE MP3. Click here to hear it streaming on my Vox blog. The sound quality isn’t tip-top, but hey... it’s history. It’s Nina!
Follow this link to Download.com to cop the freeness.
Thanks for these Dave! Nina Simone is my favorite female jazz vocalist. She's on my Mt. Rushmore of female stylists along with Betty Carter, Abby Lincoln, and Sarah Vaughn.
ReplyDeleteWill comment back after I listen to these.
Nina Simone is my gurl! She introduced me to Bob Dylan ("Just Like a Woman," "The Times They Are A Changing") She wasn't a big fan of her "Baltimore" album, but it's one of my favs. I'll be looking for this one to add to the collection. Two other re-releases I'm looking for - Melba Moore's "Peach Melba" recording; and Melissa Manchester's "Home to Myself" - very acoustic, Village NY before she started crying out loud. Thanks UBM.
ReplyDeleteNina was a hoot. I loved her autobiography--girlfriend hit on Minister Farrakhan. Mississippi gotdamn.

ReplyDeleteand search "Farrakhan." I believe it's pg. 99.
I wonder if he can play "Sugar in My Bowl" on the violin. LOL.
Thanks UBM. I love my Nina.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been looking for her interpretation of “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” for months, if not years, with no result. Anybody has any clues, connects, info? Greatly thankful in advance.
I came back to this post because I finished listening to Democracy Now's coverage of the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination. One of the music bumpers was Simone's "Why? The King of Love is Dead." It's on the Protest Anthology, too.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a pretty good compilation. Thanks for the heads up, UBM.
^ Thanks for that information, Bklyn6.
