ReplyDeleteVery interesting pick. Here' s the story on Jasper. He's largely responsible for the way black preachers preach - in terms of technique at least.
A lot of black preachers take a seminar called "The Hoop" from Jasper. For those who do not know "hooping" is the technique of finding the right moments to elevate your sermon into the kind of call and response, half song/half talk rhythm that really gets a crowd going. The preaching equivalent of using piano and forte dynamics in music. There's a whole theory of when and how to do it that's absolutely fascinating.
It's actually a formal class with a book and tape, and he's been the Zig Zigler of hooping for the past 30 years or so. Major major figure in preaching circles.
