The ‘racism test’

A week ago, HBO started uploading clips to YouTube. Embeddable clips. Whoopee!

Here’s a little clip from Season One of “Extras.” (Am I the only one who thought Season One was funnier?)

This is the one where Maggie dated a black guy. (I never knew what a “golliwog” was until I saw this episode.)

Ricky Gervais, like Larry David, enjoys tweaking white people’s racial embarrassments. (You know, it is so complicated being white in today’s topsy-turvy world...)

  1. I agree Season One was funnier, but I think it was supposed to be, or rather, Season Two was supposed to be less funny. Same thing with The Office. Nice to see embeddable clips, though ... there are so many great celebrity cameos on Extras I wouldn't know where to start. OK, I would, with Kate Winslet's dirty phone calling nun, then David Bowie's perfect song about our hero. Then maybe when Harry Potter hit Emma Peel with a condom, and then ... aw, I give up.

  2. Golliwogs are like pickaninnies. I collect Black memorabilia and I have one. Um...I'm Black.

  3. ^ One of these days, I'd like to interview actor Clinton Derricks about his extensive golliwog collection.

He even wrote a book about it.

  4. Golliwogs are a mess. Some years ago they had an exhibit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands about racist imagery and paraphernalia which included the Golliwogs. They are just pickaninnies and they are the ugliest things ever...I think. What was so interesting is that most Brits who LOVE their Golliwogs think that they're so cute and didn't understand how anyone could think they were the least bit offensive...

The exhibit had some other "cute" images like "negerzoenen" or "Negro kisses", little black chocolate covered cream candies.

Then there's the charming "Zwarte Piets", the black helpers for the Dutch Santa Claus that all the kids are taught to fear. They dress in Black face (oh yes they do...) and wear read lipstick and gold earrings. Their images are everywhere - looking just like that.

The Negro Kisses are gone (now just called "Zoenen) but these "Piets" are still around, come Xmas time, in the new millenium. Really.
