Need something to get your mojo workin’? Download this FREE MP3 of Muddy Waters live in concert.
Muddy and his killer band (including Pinetop Perkins, George “Harmonica” Smith and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith) played the University of Oregon on October 20, 1971.
This gig was well documented. Parts of it are included on the 1999 CD “The Lost Tapes,” which Michael G. Nastos of All Music Guide says “might be the best live Muddy Waters ever released.” The full set is available on DVD (“Muddy Waters – In Concert 1971”).

Thanks for this Dave. I have HUGE love for Muddy (and Hooker and Howlin' Wolf and T-Bone Walker). My favorite recording of his to date is Live at Mr. Kelly's which is from about this same time (I believe 1972). The wonderful Otis Spann is gone, but Muddy is in wonderful voice and does a bangin' cover of Hooker's Boom Boom Boom Boom.
ReplyDeleteThe live recordings are such a treat to listen to - LOUD.
I just got the Muddy Water's Live @Mister Kelly's LP into the store,a smoker.
ReplyDeleteAlso scored a slightly beaten copy of Otis Span's-The Blues Never Die on Prestige that I'm enjoying, rice krispies and all.
For one step earlier and simpler any Mississippi John Hurt,Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee or any of the Folkways or early field recordings.
Susie: Thanks for that. The blues is another big gap in my cultural education.
ReplyDeleteDJ: Thanks for those tips.
dj - you have Live at Mr. Kelly's on vinyl? In the store? Are you selling it?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I do,sell records(no CD's).

Ex vinyl junkie that still needed to smell wax to get through the day.
Now I sell more than I buy for myself.
Chess/Cadet orange label Canadian re-issue,but in nice shape.
Don't know if it be worth it for you to ship to wherever you are and you should be able to find cheaper/closer to you.
Thanks for asking though!

I'm a long time city slicker who for years refused to pollute my Soul, Jazz, Rock collection with that 'country azz' stuff, with just a few exceptions....Till Mr. Baltimore beat the Blues into me over a few years with albums, concerts, Personalities and Love.
In 1988, we spent almost 3 weeks in Mississippi, attending various concerts, shows, libraries, and his personal Blues peeps.... After that experience, that's ALL I wanted to listen to for the next year. The Love continues to this day....even developed a liking for country and bluegrass.
What a fabulous portrait of Muddy! Thanks for this and the music, UBM. FYI, Wolfgang's Vault has a few live concert recordings of Muddy Waters shows - I am coincidentally listening to one right now from March 4, 1977 with Muddy Waters, Johnny Winters, and James Cotton. It includes Pinetop Perkins on piano, Bob Margolin and Luther Guitar Johnson on guitars, Calvin Fuzz Jones on bass, and Willie Big Eyes Smith on drums.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the legendary Pinetop Perkins is 94 and still on tour! He and Dave Honeyboy Edwards - also in his 90s and one of the last surviving links to the real Delta tradition - just earned Grammys this year.
