I tip my chapeau to Mes Deux Cents, a blogger with fine taste in music. She finds the coolest clips on YouTube, including this performance of “Memory Lane” – one of my favorite Minnie Riperton tunes.
If you know the song, you’ll be waiting for Minnie to nail those high notes. Boy oh boy, does she nail ’em.
I believe this is the first song by her that I heard. Man, she had a voice.
ReplyDeleteUBM,
ReplyDeleteRecently I found out that Minnie was with a band called Rotary Connection before her solo career.
Have you heard of them? If not you might want to check them out. They had a few interesting songs.
Thanks for the mention.
I was lucky enough to catch Minnie at the Cellar Door here in DC back in the 70s. Tom Terrell hipped me to a website called Dusty Groove where I was pleased to find and buy the CD of the only two Rotary Connection LPs ever pressed, on a single CD. Sister had awesome pipes. Check out her daughter Maya Rudolph on SNL. She can sing a little too but not like her moms.
ReplyDeleteYes, she really did have a spectacular voice. Mariah's got nothing on Minnie. And I always loved that bit Richard Pryor did about her and what it would have been like to have her hit that highest note at certain moment of passion.

ReplyDeleteI've got some Rotary Connection in my get-to-it-eventually pile, Mes Deux Cents. Ashamed to say I haven't put my ear to it.
There's a P-Funk connection there too. Rotary Connection vocalist Sidney Barnes was a former songwriting partner of George Clinton's in Detroit.

ReplyDeleteLOL. I remember that! :-D
I also remember when Maya Rudolph was a little girl (when most kids were reading Ebony, "Jr." I was reading Ebony and Jet Magazine). At the end of "Loving You" Minnie sings "Maya, Maya, Maya...."

ReplyDeleteactually, Rotary Connection released SIX albums between 1967 and 1971: s/t, Aladdin, some Christmas album i can't remember the title of, Songs, Dinner Music and Hey Love.
all of them are available on CD, as far as i know... most of them on the 2 LPs on 1 CD format like the one you got.
I've never seen her perform, only seen pictures of her. Thank you.
