I remember when Marvel did their "gay cowboy" Rawhide Kid miniseries, an ever more exaggerated tribute to that cover was drawn for it by cover artist Dave Johnson. Sadly, Marvel did not approve it.
The shadow cast on the Rifleman's pants by the log is giving me impure thoughts.
This is like the kind of thing mentioned in The Celluloid Closet. You get the impression that some semi-closeted photographer who'd been verbally abused by Chuck Connors was getting revenge.
