Lorne Michaels, call Warren Hutcherson

The New York Observer asked a question yesterday that I’d never thought about. When will “Saturday Night Live” find somebody to play Barack Obama in a sketch?

The Observer observed that Kenan Thompson is too portly for the part. And former cast member Tim Meadows pointed out that “for a white guy to do Barack Obama, it would have to be approached very cautiously.” A spokeman for “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels said: “We’ll know when we know. Truthfully, there’s no timetable on these things.”

Well, nobody asked me, but I’ve got the perfect guy for them. Warren Hutcherson. He’s a standup comic, he’s done some sketch acting, and he’s a writer. Matter of fact, he was on the writing staff of “Saturday Night Live” in the early ’90s.

And he resembles Barack Obama.

I’m willing to bet that some stranger has asked Warren Hutcherson on the street, “Are you Barack Obama?”

Unfortunately, I can’t find a good photograph of Mr. Hutcherson on the Internet – not one – to show you what I mean. But I did find this video clip on an obscure comedy site called The Ointment. (I’ve seen Hutcherson be much funnier, but just check out his look. With the right material, he could nail an Obama sketch.)

[UPDATE (05/05/07): Hat-tip to Adam at ALOTT5MA for providing me linkage to the above screenshot of Warren Hutcherson from “Mr. Show.” It suffices to make my point.]

Not like Hutcherson has a lot of time on his hands. He’s producing a new sitcom for BET called ”Somebodies.”

Still, a good idea is a good idea.

  1. Is this him:

I think Kenan could do a funny Obama impression. It's not like they're really trying with some of the other impersonations (I like Jason Sudeikis, but his Dubya is crap), plus I just plain like KT.

  2. Yep, Dez, that's him... and that's the only image I found. Unacceptable! I thought there was at least one good photo of every human who ever lived on the Internet.

I like KT too... love his double-takes. But even his Al Sharpton ain't much... and he's got the build for it.

  3. I'm with you. Every time I see Obama I think "He looks just like Warren Hutcherson. (I've know warren for 20 years) and he's a great comic actor. However He's under contract with a studio so he's not likely to be available. Anlother good choice would be Wyatt Cenac. Another very funny comic who has been doing Obama with the Upright Citizens Brigade in LA. And he's got no contract- yet. (I'm predicting Wyatt will be a regular on some TV show in the next 3 years.(Which is th real reason I'm commenting- to make my public endorsement of Wyatt Cenac.))

  5. Doesn't SNL use Darrell Hammond to impersonate Jesse Jackson? Would they treat this any differently?

  6. Johnnie: Thanks for commenting. I'd never heard of Wyatt Cenac, but I'll definitely check him out. Live on stage, if possible.

  7. mp: I also remember Will Ferrell was also recruited to do Jesse Jackson. I still think it's better if Obama did a guest appearance on SNL and did a skit where he goes backstage after a speech and, you know, "let it all hang out" with the people he keeps close.

Sad that it has to come from a Mr Show fan on the other side of the world, it's a funny sketch too, should be on youtube.

  12. OMG, I happened to turn on HBO last night, and there he was, Warren Hutcherson, in the 1991 HBO 14TH ANNUAL YOUNG COMEDIANS SHOW (hosted by Richard Lewis). I thought exactly the same thing: that Lorne Michaels better track this guy down! Too funny. It was SHOCKING to see how much he resembles Obama. We'll have to keep watching...
