Entertainment columnist Bill Vaughan offers this tantalizing item on his Tasty Clips site:
“Tasty Clips hears that the music royalty that is PRINCE and MICHAEL JACKSON are about to kiss and make up. The differences began back in 1987 when the idea to make “Bad” a duet was nixed by his purple highness. Producer Quincy Jones has said that it was because Prince thought that the song would be a hit whether he was in it or not, but later reports surfaced that he scoffed at the concept of getting the beat down from Michael. Now the two may make sweet music due to the efforts of Will.I.Am who has made it his mission. The Black Eyed Peas frontman, who is serving as producer of Michael’s comeback album, got them together last week at Prince’s 3121 Club in Las Vegas. A Dallas Austin composition may be selected for the monumental pairing. However, a best bet seems to be a song from The Beatles catalog that Michael is a co-owner of. This rumor is supported by the number of Fab Four covers Prince has been dusting off at his club gigs. Be on the lookout for a major announcement after he leaves Vegas on March 31.”
Prince & Michael… it had to happen, and I hope it does, and it better live up to the notion.
I told y’all here that I saw will.i.am get on stage during one of Prince’s 3121 shows. So it all sounds credible to me.
Heck, I’d be satisfied just hearing Prince rock a few Beatles tunes.
So... I guess Prince’s weekend gigs in Vegas will come to an end on March 31? Aw shoot… I might have to hit that one more time…
How about some Parliament covers - Prince could be an alto Starchild, and MJ could be "Sir Funk, D'Void of Nose."
ReplyDeleteBesides, Michael Jackson's probably got as good a claim at owning the rights to those songs as anyone else does.
"Sir Funk, D'Void of Nose"... you sick, Eric, you sick!
ReplyDeleteBut that's a game I used-to could spend a whole afternoon playing... the best P-Funk song for Prince and MJ to cover as a duet. Hmmm...
well, the will.i.am part is what bothers me. but he seems to do better solo stuff than with the black eyed peas. 25 years ago this would be a dream pairing, but now...the song just better be amazing or it will drag Prince's credibility down. i hope it works. in 1979 these two were my favorites! who am i kidding? off the wall is still one of my favorite cds.
ReplyDeleteWell Prince did a nice (semi)cover of Parlet's "Cookie Jar" back in the day..
ReplyDeleteJay Smooth: For real? I'd love to hear that... is it on any bootlegs/videos/after-party recordings? Always loved "Cookie Jar"... that pocket... I like Fuzzy Haskins's original too; different feel.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting.
Why do people make crap like this up? Here it is Feb of 2008 and nothing happened.
ReplyDeleteI think MJ was at the Prince show that WillIAm performed at (end of January 2007, Saturday show). There was a person in a white burka in the VIP section, dead center. We saw this person running through the casino befor the show (with posse in tow) and then saw him(?) in the show. Prince walked through the crowd to where they were located during the set...
