Carlos Mencia strikes again...

As I mentioned in a previous comment thread, Carlos Mencia has stolen shamelessly from major black comedians for years. But even I can’t believe him ripping off Bill Cosby in his 2006 Comedy Central special, “No Strings Attached.” But the proof is right there on YouTube.

Mencia must be called to account. Fuck those fired U.S. Attorneys, let’s get some answers to this shit!

Hat-tip to Philip Arthur Moore, who wrote about this today at his blog, The Think.

  1. I saw this yesterday and I am truly appalled. Not only that, but he stole from the late Sam Kinison!

  4. Sure, the bit itself is stolen, but the inarticulate screaming and casual misogyny at the end is all Mencia.

  5. I'm with you justjudith. The best part about showing those clips back-to-back apart from showing how baldly he rips off the routine, is how unfunny he is. Cosby's delivery is perfect and Mencia has nothing. No chops. At all. Why hasn't Cosby sued this assclown?

  6. Judith and Bret: I hadn't even paused to consider that deeper lesson, seeing Cosby and Mencia performing basically the same joke side-by-side. Cosby's timing, his humanistic truth-telling, his warmth of spirit, the way he takes his sweet time building to the payoff... all great.

Mencia's rush of words, his nasty edge, his manic screaming, alll ruin the simple beauty of this routine.

So, yeah, if you steal great material and you're still not funny, you got problems...

  9. And here's one more - in which George Lopez says he punched out Mencia for using 13 minutes of Lopez' material on his HBO special. Mencia's response is that Lopez doesn't want any "Hispanic" comediens to make it. Fucking funny.

Talks about Robin Williams' rep as a joke-stealer, too. If it's true that Mencia isn't even Mexican, then...grrr...well, I can't even say what I'm thinking right now lest he come in here and say I'm violating his copyrights. Pinche pendejo!

  13. Well, this pretty much seals Mencia's fate for me. Some of the other instances where he was accused of stealing, I thought it might be marginally possible that he just thought up a similar joke. For example, that joke about illegal immigrants being needed to put up a wall at the border is a relatively simple joke that I've heard several comedians tell different variations on, but I was still pretty sure he was a thief. This instance makes into an absolute certainty. It's literally the same fucking joke about a very specific and not all to common topic.

  14. Hey UBM, here's another good video on youtube (actually it's an audio clip) but the guy makes some great points about this stuff.

  15. i agree with you guys agreeing with me lol -- it's a sad commentary when you can blatantly steal from people and still can't be funny. taking bill cosby jokes and making them mean isn't really a talent. comedy, much like music, is in a sad state right now.
