Tuesday 12-inch Flashback: ‘Rockit’

Am I the only one who can’t stand this record and never could stand it?

But you loved the video, right? :p

That video was freaky to me. I think it's why I liked the song.

Nope, you're not the only one. It was my official "intro" to Herbie (it came out when I was in the 4th grade). I thought it was cool then, but as I got older, I realized that his best work came BEFORE this. The sad part is that for too many people, this is the first song that comes to mind when they think of the man.

Can't comment on this one. Too busy dancing to the beat!

T: Welcome to my spot. Yeah... I grew up on "Chameleon" and "Ready or Not." Now those were jams.

Rockit is the bomb. I ain't gonna claim that it is on par with his more serious jazz or jazz-funk stuff. But drop that tune to a suitably hip dancefloor and you'll see why it's great.

The part where the scratching takes over still holds up strong. But this gets into a whole other issue about jazz artists trying to blend in other genres. He was at least prescient. Miles' "Doo Bop" was bullshit completely.
