If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know I dig roots musician Corey Harris and the old-timey fiddle band Carolina Chocolate Drops.
Well, they’re both performing today – along with some Native American blues bands – at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
The music will be live-streamed below, starting at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
At 3 p.m., there’ll be a scholarly discussion of the relationship between black and indigenous roots music. That will be live-streamed also.
UPDATE (08/22/09): I caught most of the Chocolate Drops, but missed Corey Harris. Below is a 7-minute clip from Corey’s set.

they were on a repeat of Prairie home Companion today! They're interesting.
^ If the Chocolate Drops could get on Letterman or "The Tonight Show," I think they could really blow up. Crowds love 'em.
hey! i will check this out. i never heard of them until i was looking for the new release by joe henry.
turns out he is is producing their new album. joe is a master and a great artist in his own right...and
"fun fact," madonna's bro-in-law. he produced ornette coleman and a bunch of other cool stuff.

do you have a link to any of their music? did you ever stream them?
^ Indeed, maria. I first blogged about 'em in February '08... BAM!
Thanks for that great Joe Henry news. When he's involved, the whole entertainment industry takes notice. After he produced Betty LaVette, she got booked on those late-night shows.
gosh, is that true about joe?
i'm thrilled. i guess he's had a slow and quiet but steady rise. or maybe gained more attention for his work with others.
i've been a fan since the beginning; have seen him live a couple of times. he opened for elvis costello once at merriweather, and no one paid him any mind. sad but happens a lot with the opener.
