Memorial

Much of the Michael Jackson memorial service today I heard on my car radio. Which annoyed me a bit, because on L.A.’s top talk-radio station, KFI, the hosts were dogging Michael throughout.

Absolutely no respect for the deceased... or for the fans who take his passing seriously. Maybe I’ll stream some of that tomorrow, if KFI’s coverage comes available as a podcast.

Meanwhile, here’s a reminder of why Michael Jackson was one of the most popular entertainers of all time:

1. “Don’t Know Why I Love You” – Jackson 5

2. “Lookin’ Through the Windows” – Jackson 5

3. “The Life of the Party” – Jackson 5

4. “Show You the Way to Go” – The Jacksons

DId you hear Nelson George trying not to slap Bill Wyman (sp) on NPR? Wyman said Michael Jackson was no Elvis.

I tuned in to see the last bit of it on TV and saw his daughter speak and burst into tears.

The fact that he was a father, a brother, a son and a friend kind of gets buried in all the other stuff.

It was remarkable that fans got to participate in the celebration of his life and it was wrenching to watch his family and friends grieve his loss. Any of us who've lost someone we love know exactly what they're feeling.

It sucks.

The 24/7 media coverage sucks as well and I've kept it turned off because I'm tired of all the negativity. Not just about MJ but in general. It wears me out. No wonder so many people I know are on anti-depressants. They watch the news.

@Susie " he was a father, a brother, a son and a friend..."

You forgot 'drug addict, pedophile, and wanna-be white' in that list...

"Show You the Way to Go" is one of my FA-VO-RITE J5/Jacksons songs. Simply love it. "Don't Know Why I Love You" is my favorite song in which a young MJ sings lead.

I didn't know "Smile" was Michael's favorite song (didn't know it was written by Charlie Chaplin, either). I wonder if sales of that song will surge now?

Hey there!

I saw the memorial while I was at my pedicurist....

It was touching...

I still wonder where his real friends were...

I don't know why Jennifer Hudson was there... did she even KNOW Michael that well...

John Mayer played his guitar... *sigh* Was Prince too busy to show up?

I got home in time to see that on TV, Suze. Touching indeed.

Hey Lisa. I also thought it would've been nice if Prince had been there.

I posted about a rumor a year or two ago that will.i.am was trying to put Michael and Prince together in a recording studio.

Did Prince and MJ ever meet??

I didn't even know he'd recorded that song until you told me, in a comment about the Brand New Heavies. Remember that, bklyn6?

:^)

I heard a story that years ago Prince was asked to join Michael on the "Beat It" video. However, the deal breaker for Prince was the opening line - "Your butt is mine." That's just what I heard. But nice service. Marlon had me sniffling. In fact seeing all the brothers there touched me. A long hard road they've been on together.

UBM, I used to hear about this video when I hung out at Prince.org. I can't remember if I actually saw it--maybe I'm trying to block it from my memory. Prince fans used to say that he was acting weird. I knew it would be painful for me to watch. :-/

"I didn't even know he'd recorded that song until you told me, in a comment about the Brand New Heavies."

I'm shocked! :p

I would LOVE a compilation of J5/Jacksons covers. Of course, "I Don't Know Why I Love You" would be on it, and "Stand!", "Everybody is a Star", "Forever Came Today", "People Make the World Go Round", etc. I might have to compile these myself. :-D

Wait, the J5 did "Everybody is a Star"? I have to hear that, for real.

Okay, I almost want to listen, but it might make me mad.

@eclectique916 "Marlon had me sniffling." Marlon looked hot. He almost made me forget about Jackie.

I don't think I knew about Marlon's twin brother, Brandon, though. :-(

I think a lot of his real friends were in the audience. Jennifer Hudson did a wonderful job; it's hard to say who knew Michael and in what capacity. Perhaps he was significant in her life. Maybe he sent her condolences when her in her time of grief.

Katherine Jackson had a lot to do with who performed at the memorial. For instance, I had no idea that he had been in contact with Shaheen Jafargholi before he died.
That's his mamma - I ain't second guessing her.

Overall, I found it to be a heartfelt and moving tribute to a father, son, friend, and musician. My heart broke for his children.

"Wyman said Michael Jackson was no Elvis."

That's correct. Michael had way more talent than Elvis.

Oops. I meant the "Bad" video for that Prince story. And I should know better because I went to the "Bad" concert tour. I need a break from this.
