Election night open thread

Polls are about to close in the first batch of Eastern states.

This is the comment thread to discuss whatever you wanna discuss throughout the evening.

5:32 p.m. (Pacific Time): Holy shit! Fox News just projected Barack Obama the winner in Pennsylvania!

That is huge, people. For the past week, Karl Rove has been saying it’s impossible for McCain to win this election if he loses Pennsylvania. ...

6:04 p.m.: MSNBC says that Arizona — John McCain’s home state — is too close to call! Wow. ...

6:20 p.m.: Are you ready for this? Fox News just called Ohio for Obama! This race is over. ...

8:01 p.m.: CNN has just projected Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States!

Okay. CNN has Obama trailing in 3 swing states including Florida. Time to hit the sauce. Its going to be a loooong night folks.

I love those brief moments just after the first polls close when the electoral count temporarily resembles a baseball score.

@ubm and dm wrecks' comments: chambord martinis help immensely....

I'm freaking out. I'm sorry if I'm not being eloquent.

I've managed to go this long without checking *any* news. I really need some good news today....*fingers crossed and whatnot*

Anonymous said...

...it's looking good!

Georgia went for McCain?? The Dirrty South is letting me down. But Ohio is on the tank. Looking good except for Virginia.

Heh, Olberman just did some basic math to basically say, "Hey, isn't this whole thing over already?" and Gregory just gave him a "Hey, don't kill the manufactured tension" brushoff.

Ohio AND Pennsylvania? HOT DAMN!!! :-)

I guess I could have written in Hillary's name after all ;-)

back from phone banking and canvassing in the dark. Ohio 4 Obama baby!!!!!

Undercover Black Man said...

^ Good work, Kellybelle!

I'm not ever talking about white women again. Those women were getting it done for obama!

Obama has 200 (as per the networks).

Plus he'll get 55 from California, 11 from Washington and 7 from Oregon and 4 from Hawaii.

Which adds up to: An Obama victory!

Undercover Black Man said...

The campaign that Barack Obama has run -- its strategic vision, its disciplined execution -- will be studied by political scientists forever.

It is the new gold standard of national campaigning.

And to think... one year ago, most black folk weren't even feeling him. (Don't rewrite history, y'all.)

One of the networks (I think ABC) was discussing how unexpectedly low Republican voter turnout was in places such as Ohio. Why do you think that is, David? They knew their candidate was a loser, so they decided not to bother? :-)

Francisco said...

It's done! I'm ghostwriting Obama's acceptance speech right now. It goes like this: I know shit's bad right now with all that starvin' bullshit. And the dust storms. And we runnin' out of French Fries and burrito coverings. But I got a solution. I know everyone's shit is emotional right now, but I got a 3 step plan to fix EVERYTHING

Undercover Black Man said...

^ If I was writing Obama's inauguration speech, it would begin like this:

"Ohhh, y'all done fucked up now..."

Just to mess with their heads.

Hey guys. I'm here at Busboys and Poets. My battery's going down so I have to cool it on the live blogging. It's packed. Television camera light's in my eye. I gave two interviews tonight. Call me an agent. I'll cut a country music album. No, make it spoken word. No. Can we get a movie deal. I had my first beer when Obama hit 207 electoral votes.

Watching Fox news right now is like watching a very uncomfortable memorial service.
I'm about to uncork the champagne. This is mind blowing.

Party on, Michon!

Is Chris Matthews crazy?

They're calling Virginia for Obama. Of course, I'm getting this from the Daily Show special, so...but...still...holy moly!! :-)

CNN just projected Obama for the win. He's over the 270 mark and they're calling him President-Elect. Congrats!!!

Francisco said...

Juan Williams was holding back tears in Fox News touched on Obama's victory. Very touching and surprising. He almost let it all out but he recovered.

Barack, ...America, ...you did this thing baby! Now let me kick back and enjoy an ice cold glass of Cold Duck!

McCain's concession speech was enormously gracious.

I hope Obama, in his victory speech, is just as gracious toward him.

It's been a long time since I've felt this much hope. Thanks so much to President Barack Obama for bringing us all together...finally!! UBM posted the right song...Aint no stopping us now!

Would you get a load of this (http://www.startribune.com/)? With 69% reporting, the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota is literally separated by a single vote. I have never seen that before.

Now don't be selfish, this isn't just good for you or the USA,the whole world has just taken a step in the right direction.

For once I don't mind if the Pesedent (elect) is called "The Leader Of The Free World",cause I am putting my trust and faith in him.

Please keep him safe,as I am hearing lots of phase 2 talk, saying that he has to get through to January and beyond.

I hope we can all get beyond as the vision he describes,is our dream,a path of building, not destroying.

Holy shit.

I gotta say, david, this blog was my reality check throughout these elections. I'm from Mexico, and we had a rough day at the city today. there was a plane crash and a secretary of state died RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the city. kind of embittered the taste of victory of today, but mother of mercy, the world deserved this triumph. FLORIDA! i followed the elections like a junkie, been following since i was 14...obama se sacó la rifa del tigre, he just got himself in a catastrophical situation. but god, the momentum.... the best case for obama's presidency i heard was this: imagine a kid in the middle east watching the news on television and seeing that the president of the united states is an african american named barack obama. things will heal.

love,

-carlos

Hey Vince Spence,

All kinds of riots going on, huh?

Anonymous said...

^ If I was writing Obama's inauguration speech, it would begin like this:

"Ohhh, y'all done fucked up now..."

In my dreams he says, "'Scuse me while I whip this out."

Hey Vince Spence,

All kinds of riots going on, huh?

Heh, wonder where he is right now? In his panic room clutching the PBR?

Very gracious concession speech by Senator McCain. Too bad he abandoned that grace during his campaign, and too bad some of his followers in the room listening had to show their asses.

Well done, America.

Anonymous said...

I wish to offer readers of this site and all black people a very sincere apology. My recent comments regarding riots after the election were not only 100% wrong, but they were racist and hurtful.

Again, I was wrong and I am very sorry.

Anonymous said...

By the way, neptune & anonymous, I don't hide in my room and I don't drink. I say what I think and feel (right or wrong, bad or good) and put my real name and picture on the post - unlike both of you.

Doctor Memory said...

Vince: good on you for manning up and owning your mistake. Would that more people did that.

As to the rest, let me just say: HOLY CRAP THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING.

What a wonderful day! I have been getting congratulations from people all around the world today. Europeans were happy! My husband was getting congratulated all day at work and he's Jamaican! Congratulations to American for getting it right.

In 1969 while driving to New Orleans along the Gulf Coast, I stopped for gas in Selma. The station still had "Colored Only" bathrooms.

Now forty years later...wow!

Undercover Black Man said...

Carlos, welcome. And thanks for the comment.

vince spence, good on you for your gracious apology.

However, I couldn't care less what your name is or about your photo. I just find it interesting that you make it so obvious that you're here trolling for attention with your views that are largely out of sync with general vibe of this blog.

And as far as my (and most of the others here) not posting under my real name or with my photo: gosh, you must be new to this interwebs thing, huh?

(Sorry, UBM. Not trying to start a flame war in your space.)

Yo, it's Slap a Random White Man Week; the normal rules in the House of Love don't apply.

So Vince... you're saying it's been all love in the streets of Baltimore?
