Don’t get greedy, dammit!

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta couldn’t leave well enough alone. Check out this report from today’s Times of London:

“The election of Barack Obama as the first African-American US President could pave the way for the election of the first black Pope, according to a leading black American Catholic.

“Wilton Daniel Gregory, 60, the Archbishop of Atlanta, said that in the past Pope Benedict XVI had himself suggested that the election of a black pontiff would ‘send a splendid signal to the world’ about the universal Church. ...

“Archbishop Gregory said that the next time cardinals gathered to elect a Pope they could ‘in their wisdom’ choose an African pontiff. ‘My own election as head of the US Bishops Conference was an important signal. In 2001 the American bishops elected someone they respected regardless of his race, and the same thing could happen with the election of a Pope.’ ...”

Actually, I am hoping Bishop Magic Don Juan to be appointed to Obama's cabinet. Maybe Secretary of Education?

Also, within Catholic superstitious beliefs, one that is deeply ingrained is that a 'black pope' will be the last one before the 'end of times'. I really hope they do elect one and debunk this stupid nonsense.

I thought the end times were supposed to come after two popes die in one century. I have got to keep up with these superstitions!

Damn, Mills. WTF is wrong with you? First off, there already have been at least three black popes, the patron saint of Germany, St. Maurice is black, there's the black Madonna, etc. Not to forget that Jesus Christ was black.

So what's this "don't be greedy" bullshit?

Hey there,

Why can't a black man aspire to the highest post??

Are white men who aspire to be Pope being greedy and zealous for power??

I don't quite understand the point you are making...

Sky is no limit for a black man...

The man hasn't had sex in...well, ever, he's talkin' crazy.

Is it me, or are people all on Barack already?

@ Kellybelle: Ohhh, that's just mean, gurl!. Don't kick a brutha when he's down. He'll catch up during casting calls for his new TV shows.

DMX for Drug Czar. He'll take care of the problem himself and leave none for the rest of us.

That's the job he wanted, Kellybelle. He knows it won't be easy.

Not DMX....in keeping the flavor... the Drug Czar would have to be "Bitch set me up"

Let's say a black pope in modern times. Actually, from my knowledge of the African cardinals, they're all very conservative. I'm hoping for a progressive pope the next time around, no matter the color.

I see your sense of humor is sharp as ever, Michael.

Heh, UBM, your readers' knowledge of Africa does not seem to much exceed that of Sarah Palin's. Most Americans seem to think that all Africans are black. In fact Northern Africa, where all those three African popes originated, was and is overwhelmingly Caucasian.

Airbody gonna be biting Obama's style now. There is a 10 year old Algerian kid watching TV right now in the Parisian suburbs who will be the President of France one day.

If you put a pair of glasses on the Cardinal, to me he bears a striking resemblance to Rev. Wright...

Do you think the three Revs. (Wright, Jackson & Sharpton) are sitting by the phone awaiting a call from Barack telling them what position he has for them in the new administration?
