It’s the dog days of summer, and champeen blogger James Wolcott is doggin’ muhfuggas out. Which is fun to read.
On “John From Cincinnati”: “[T]he actors seem stranded on a desert island as David Milch tosses them script pages from a low-passing plane.”
On “Californication” (David Duchovny’s new Showtime series): “I feel sorry for the actresses cast in ‘Californication,’ who not only perform nude scenes – something many actresses are wary about, knowing those clips will be pasted forever on the internet – but then have their characters dispatched with a crude insult that adds a special spicy dash of indignity for the drive home.”
On the GOP presidential contenders: “McCain is ready to check in any day now into the Memory Motel while Thompson soaks in a bathtub of warm gravy sopping up enough authenticity for a man-sized biscuit with only two things on his mind: lovin’ his woman and becomin’ president, even if the latter entails a little thing known in the dictionary as ‘effort.’ ”

I agree completely! Allow me to add these gems as well:
"...but the way he expresses his exiled yearning and hopes of winning her back is by screwing everything handy, sometimes practically under her regal nose. (And his 12 year old daughter's. Upon spying a naked woman on the premises, Becca notes to dear old dad that the woman in has no hair on her vagina--"Do you think she's OK?" If this show had a laughtrack, it would have roared.)"
and
"The sex romps are setups for Hank's kissoff lines and parting shots, some of which are so nasty they're like being spat upon. "Consider yourself defiled," he says to one babe as he brings their session to a premature close..."
John From Cincinnati...RIP. HBO just canceled it.
^ But don't cry for Milch. HBO softened the blow by signing him to another development deal.
I hope it's a live action version of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Because that's the only thing I can think of that had an ending that made even less sense.
JohnBoy from the Nasty 'Nati is canceled? Hooray for Hollywood!
^ God'll get you for that, Mike.
I found parts of "Californication" funny, but I don't know that I want to spend much more time with that asshole, Hank.
As frustrating as "John From Cincinnati" could be, it did have some miraculous moments that I'm glad to have experienced. But I do hope Milch's next project is a little more straightforward!
