The prize is a book I mentioned on Friday: Tim Brooks’s “Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919.” The paperback is 800 pages of delicious yet little-known pop culture history.
UPDATE (07/20/07): No winner this time. The band is 8 Bold Souls out of Chicago, led by Edward Wilkerson, Jr.The track is “Brown Town,” from the 2000 CD “Last Option.” It’s available through iTunes.

That was a great piece. I dont't think it's the Dirty Dozen or Rebirth Brass Bands. But could be. Given the sound quality, I'd say Rebirth, but that would be too easy. Baad piece. You got the ear.

based on the sax player's chops, I'd say it souds more like the Dirty Dozen. Guessing it's a NOLA band and the DD can definitely handle the "jazzier" sound here.
